Good article and summary of a popular diet fad. Also gets to the naked truth at the end.

"How true. The reality of a healthy lifestyle is that it's hard work. It requires discipline, moderation, and the acceptance that there is no such thing as a quick fix. Basically, it's everything Americans don't really like very much.

So, the bottom line is this: If you don't want to look like a water buffalo, then don't eat like one.

And that's the no-spin truth."

Eat less calories than you burn in a given day.

Repeat.

Weight loss.

Pretty much how I lost 30+ pounds in 5 months.

My goal was to lose 1-2 lbs per week. Started July 1, 2012 and finished November 1. Since then I have maintained while eating mainly what I want.

I know a few people that do gluten-free. I'm not sure if it messes with their inner workings. If they're doing it as a form of weight loss, I'm not seeing the results.

I tend to eat less breads than a lot of people because americans, in general, are so shitty at making bread that they have to do really dumb things like mix in seeds and nuts (a lot of which I go anaphylactic with) to get them to taste good. Because of this, I can't really trust many breads.

But really, fad diets are fad diets; they reliy on some interesting bit of science and it blows up nto the whole pseudoscience that lulls americans into thinking that there's a quick fix.

Portion control, moderation, and getting your barrel-ass off of the couch works far better than cutting carbs, gluten, or whatever.

I thought the point of gluten free was for people with celiacs? Not as a diet? I thought they were allergic to it or something?

That is the point....unfortunately there are those that will capitalize on it and try to come up with that new "diet" craze.

The funny thing is that gluten free does not mean reduced fat, fat free, or even less calories. Also, it is not just wheat that needs to be given up, but also barley and rye. So hopfully those on gluten free diets to lose weight don't drink beer, drink many spirits, or soda carbinated with beer byproduct, etc. Reminds me of a vegan a work that never realized how much non-vegan stuff is in booze.

Im supposed to eat gluten free for health reasons as some think i might have allergies to it that flare up my muscle condition. Its freaking hard to avoid gluten becaue that shit is in everything. Have no idea why anyone would want to do it for weight loss. Only reason anyone would ever lose weight on that diet is because frankly you can't eat anything. Mine as well just eat ice berg lettuce and an apple for the rest of your life.

I am not "gluten free" but I don't eat wheat. Period. I don't replace wheat with "gluten free" products that contain corn starch, rice starch or other ingredients to get around the gluten thing.

I don't do it as a diet (although I lost 12 lbs the first two weeks I stopped eating it). I am not allergic to it, but after not eating it, and then re-introducing it into my system I cramp up, get bloated and have all sorts of abdominal pain. That's about all the proof I need to tell me that modern wheat is just a poison to my body.

That's not entirely true. Eat too many calories from carbs and you'll likely have trouble losing weight, period. Cut your carbs down significantly or to reasonable levels and you'll likely lose weight. It's been proven time and again that two diets, equal in calories, but made up of different types of calories; those that were high in fat and protein are much more likely to lose weight than those high in carbs but low in fats. Also, it's likely that refinied carbs from anything processed is much worse. If your carbs are made up of mostly fruits you'll likely be ok, but throw in breads, pastas, or anything in a box you're going to have trouble. The problem with people going gluten free as a diet, as already mentioned, is that they substitute it with other processed foods that are just as bad.

I just had a gluten free pizza the other day from Dominos. Gotta say it wasn't bad at all. It was different, and tasty.

I would agree that the Domino's isn't bad, but I would only pay for it with the half-off special. The pizza is too small and thin crust to pay 20 bucks for it IMO.

I've noticed that heartburn is worse when I eat a lot of wheat products.

Not sure if there's a correlation, though.

It is pricey, but it aint 20 bucks. I think it starts at 10 bucks. I get a nice discount, so that does help.

Most gluten free stuff seems expensive, and I wonder if it really costs more to produce.
