Cubs Sign Gleyber Torres, Erling Moreno
By Tim Dierkes [July 2 at 3:30pm CST]
3:30pm: The Cubs have also inked Colombian right-hander Erling Moreno for $800K, according to Badler. Moreno ranked as BA's No. 16 prospect and MLB.com's No. 17 prospect. The 6'3", 190-pound 16-year-old has touched 90 mph with his fastball and projects to become a power pitcher down the road.

In case you missed it, the Cubs, who have been very active in trading for international bonus money today, also inked Dominican right-hander Jefferson Mejia for $850K earlier today.

10:59am: The Cubs made a big international signing today, inking 16-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Gleyber Torres to a $1.7MM deal according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. Torres ranked second among international prospects on the list from Baseball America's Ben Badler, and third on MLB.com's list. The Cubs also signed Dominican righty Jefferson Mejia for $850K today, but still have plenty to spend given their $4,557,200 pool.

Torres has "the potential for five average or better tools," wrote Badler, who noted that he has drawn comparisons to Freddy Sanchez.

Always nice to see that Theo has signed more teenage bodies for The Neverland Ranch of The Dominican.

This is great news.

Well the Dominican is one of the best countries at producing MLB talent. However he is 16 and it's hard to be excited about a kid that is the same age as some freshman in HS

No word yet but Dodgers are still the odds on favorite to get him.

Since the Cubs aren't spending on the Major League team as far as free agents, why don't they make a huge splash for this guy and land him? History shows the Dodgers are quite astute at landing pitching talent.

If you want to load the farm with pitching talent, damn it, go out and do it.

I would love the Cubs to go out and grab him. I've been pretty clear about that, and the Cubs are definitely at least keeping tabs on him. We will see, but I was just stating what most of the experts have been reporting with Gonzalez, who by the way still has to be unblocked before being able to sign.
