Taking my first trip to the Big Island. Any suggestions from folks that have been there I'm all ears.

Big Island can be very dusty in certain spots, some amazing places will get siderailed on windy days and you'll feel like everything you eat has the texture of home-made charcoal toothpaste.

I lived in Hawaii for 3 years, been on all the major islands. Papakolea is really cool unique life experience to see for 20-30 minutes, but there isn't a whole lot to do there. So if you're into rare nature things, make sure to look into it. And of course, you don't go to the big island and not trek up the volcano, pending which trails are open. Big island is not a beachgoers island in general. I mean, you *can*, it is an island afterall, but there are dozens of better places to go to. Instead you're going to really just see all the different ways the volcanic activity has made its mark over the years. Not the best chillax swimming place, some snorkelling is top notch, and hang gliding is A+++. 500 semi-familiar foods served with cold rice and mac salad, and each island has their own thing, so that is also something to dive into.

I’ve been to the big island several times but mostly for work. I did have the opportunity to spend time in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and it was well worth the trip. It’s pretty cool to be so close to active volcanos.

I’ve played golf at the Fairmont Orchid. Both courses are beautiful if you like the game and have the time.

Have a great trip...

@SERE Bear is off on his sailboat somewhere, but I'm pretty sure he lived in Hawaii for awhile.

We lived on Oahu but visited the big island.

Many of ourhighlights of our visit were a direct result of getting a rental car and driving around the island.
The green sand beach is a nice visit. Requires a short hike and a steep decent to the beach.
stopping along the road to explore old lava tubes.
Seeing the stark contrast in landscape of where old lava flows cut through the lush vegetation.
Stopping at various beachs.

Helicopter ride to view the lava and waterfalls. Expensive, but worth it.

Boat is hauled out and strapped down in St Augustine for hurricane season. We will return to it in November to head to Bahama for six months.

I forgot to check in on your thing :) Did you guys hang out in St Augustine at all? If you come back in late November, the Christmas lights in St Augustine are awesome:

Yeah, I'm all about just taking the car and exploring. From what I've seen you can't go wrong over there.

We spent a week there and saw some of the sights however most of our time was spent closing the boat down and making repairs.
