Quit putting them in animal feeds. Quit handing them out for sniffles, colds, and the flu.

And there is no big money in antibiotics right now so there have been very few new ones over the last 10 to 20 years.

It is something that I worry about because I am allergic to several and immune to several more. I was on antibiotics constantly as a child because of severe sinus infections starting when I was 18 months old. There are many times when I got worse while I was taking them. When I was in high school I had been on Cipro for a week and got worse. I ended up with double pneumonia and it was August. And when I was 5 I had been on different antibiotics for weeks and ended up being taken to the ER on Christmas Eve with a fever of 105.6 and I had been to the Dr at least 3 times that week. I had no resistance to anything and many antibiotics just quit working for me. Now anything I have to get is usually very expensive.

Saw a great documentary on some Canadian Consumer show a while ago. It is the anti-biotics that is in animal feed that is a big problem, especially chicken.

Antibiotics have a specific MOA against specific groups of bacteria based on the cellular structure and bio-physiology/chemistry of the bacteria (gram positive or gram negative, anearobic or aerobic). No antibiotic covers everything. No antibiotic works on you per say nor can you become immune to an antibiotic. Just because a particualr antibioitc didn't work for todays infection doesn't mean it won't work 2 years for now for a new infection, And actually the most common reason an antibiotic doesn't work is because your infection was misdiagnosed as bacterial when it is actually viral. or more commonly your health care provider long ago grew tired of arguing with people or trying to explain to them why they don't need it and just write a prescription for them when asked. Another thing to keep in mind people often confuse side effects with allergy. True allergy presents in well defined specific syndromes for the type of allergic reaction. Some pretty well designed studies in people with "multiple medication allergy syndrome" proved the vast majority of them weren't actually allergic, but just having side effects, coincedental non-related illness or anxiety reactions.
