Grand Theft Auto III HD fan mod coming soon

This mod is made by hardcore modders of GTA 3, as well as former and current designers and programmers from Rockstar who simply wanted to advance the original. With permission, it took all of the best existing mods, and also took the entire engine apart, adding textures, images, and 3D models at higher polys and resolutions, on par or exceeding that of GTA IV. Also, included are many fixes and features that were released with Vice City and San Andreas, because they were based on the same engine, also with better textures and polys, plus miscellaneous fixes.

The mod has been a work in progress for over 2 years, and as long as 9 years if you include all of the existing mods made that will be used, and it is undergoing the final tweaks before it's release, expected sometime by the end of this month. August 2012.


I just thought I would give you guys a heads up. Mods this deep and elaborate are very rare.

The GTA III project is trying to recompile the engine hardcore, so you can run all 3-series GTA on one engine with all of the features, and all of the characters are playable. GTA3, VC/SA, LC Stories, and VC stories. Not to be confused with THIS particular project, although the HD files from this, will be compatible with the next big project. So of course, every bit of HD work people have put into the other projects are going to go a long way into the mass collaboration, which should wind up being a 20gb game, but a bad-ass one, at that.

Actually, my bad, the Vice City restoration is a ways to go (60% completion now reported). At some point, the best modders decided that they would rather rebuild Vice City and Vice City stories for the San Andreas executable, because the engine can handle the larger textures without risking the hacks necessary to the VC executable to make the game unstable. For some reason, because GTA III's Liberty City map is considerable smaller.

GTA IV is the "Rage" Engine, and there are also HD modifications in progress for all of the prior games, minus Chinatown and Advance. Plus there is a project for GTA IV, to make it true HD or better by fixing all of the ingame texture and models.

There is also a team working on recompiling the GTA IV executable so it can load every version of GTA possible, but the modders are Russian, so we'll see.

Seriously crazy stuff.
