As you celebrate this year's Fourth of July with your families and friends, please take a moment to reflect on the history behind our nation's birthday celebration. Our brave Soldiers under General Washington valiantly fought against tyranny and subjugation on our own land. And with our victory in hand, President Washington and our forefathers struggled tirelessly to put into place a new form of government that was as yet untested anywhere else in the world. Those wise and storied men read voraciously, argued passionately and collaborated successfully to ensure that our unified thirteen colonies would have a chance to succeed.
Today we are fortunate citizens of The United States due to their extraordinary vision and persistence. The Soldiers who fought those battles so many years ago on our home ground fostered a long and honorable legacy. We celebrate our first Soldiers and the many millions of brave men and women who have served since. We can honor their legacy by continuing to make our country stronger as compassionate, values-driven, hard-working citizens.
I encourage you to take a moment on this Fourth of July to hug your family, extend your hand to your neighbor and remember that we are one country.
