Haviland joins a list of candidates that also includes Craig Ramsay, who was Atlanta’s coach this season. TSN reported Wednesday that former Edmonton Oilers coach Craig MacTavish will interview with new Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff either Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Claude Noel, coach of the Winnipeg-based AHL Manitoba coach, has also been reported to be a candidate.

I can't see why they wouldn't hire Haviland. I would think all the blocks are stacked in his favor also. Not only because of the ex players he knows on the club but just because he has such a great resume at the farm and pro level and he has a very strong reputation around the league as a great hockey guy and person. And I am going to miss the hell out of that guy both the skinny and fat models of the Haviland. I do think he will get the job and it will be a very big loss for the Hawks org.

I agree that Haviland would be an excellent coach. But there is a reason why Cheveldayoff won't hire Haviland.

Cheveldayoff was hired by Craig Heisinger, the former GM of the Manitoba Moose and now senior VP of the Winnipeg (Insert New Name). Heisinger hired Claude Noel as the the last coach of the Moose.

Okay then I was wrong if true they are leaning towards MacTavish. That will be the Winnipeg franchises very first mistake.

Havi is the diamond in the rough. The team that grabs him as a head coach in the future will reap great rewards. Glad he is safe behind our bench for now.

Havi's interview isn't until today according to Chicago Sports.com. If he's already out of consideration why go to the trouble? IMO he's still in the running until they officially anouce who the coach will be. My money is on Cheveldayoff picking his guy which probably means Havi is gone.

According to D Dregger Mactavish is not a lock. Will be interesting.

NHL sources are all over the place on this.

Craig MacTavish also told he's out in Wpg. Down to Noel and Haviland.

Craig Ramsay will NOT be coach of Winnipeg franchise. Was informed Monday.

Something I've been wondering of late is what is going to happen to Torchetti. If he's not going to be moving to Winnipeg I'd welcome him back to our bench with open arms.

Heard a story that he was released by True North.

Haviland sounds like he's going to be the man in Winnipeg. Jackass Jaekel wrote about it but there seem to be other sources pointing towards that as well.

Hints Winnipeg is favoring Haviland

7:50AM ET

Atlanta Thrashers

The Winnipeg franchise is down to two candidates for the head coaching vacancy after telling incumbent coach Craig Ramsay and former NHL coach Craig MacTavish that they are no longer under consideration for the job. That leaves Blackhawks assistant Mike Haviland and former Jackets coach Claude Noel as the two finalists, but there may be reason to think Haviland is the favorite.

It was rumored former Wild coach Todd Richards would come to Winnipeg with Noel if he were hired. But Richards jumped the gun and took an assistant job with the Columbus Blue Jackets. So Illegal Curve makes the observation that it "may mean Noel not favorite for head coaching position."

Now, admittedly, that's a weak connection and Richards may have just preferred the Columbus job over the Winnipeg job. But the Winnipeg brass did just pass on a handful of other former NHL coaches, so perhaps they are looking to get a fresh start with a first-time NHL coach in Haviland.
