  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl 1m I wondered if CHI would think about using compliance buyout on Hossa next year, but it won't have one if it uses them on Montador and Olesz.

Buying out Montador and Olesz just made too much sense. Can't bury them without taking a cap hit anymore. They both have little time left on their contracts so the cost to buy them out isn't ridiculous. This will save the Blackhawks right around $5mil in cap space, to get them to approximately $7mil+ for the time being.

Hossa didn't make sense from a hockey point of view or a business one. The only downfall to Hossa is the length of contract and how if he retires it will still count against the Blackhawks (as of right now, but a lot can change). For a $5.2mil cap hit, Hossa is well worth the money. Blackhawks would have had to pay Hossa $23mil overtime if they were to buy him out.

That could turn out to be huge because apparently the penalties for a player retiring now are pretty stiff on these front loaded deals.

I haven't seen or heard of Hossa even contemplating retirement... That isn't to say he hasn't had those thoughts, but if he wants to even be in the HoF discussion, he needs some more goals, assists and cups!

The concern isn't that Hossa retires this year or next, but what if he retires in year 7 or 8 when he is 37-38. Unlike the old CBA where that cap hit would no longer count against the Hawks it will through the length of the contract. The new CBA is very draconian, and the various ways that the Hawks have circumvented it have been closed.

The new CBA is kind of retarted. Teams that made these contracts before the new CBA should not have been penalized.

Well, its circumvention in the first place. Everybody knows Hossa isn't gonna play out that contract. What goes around........

Then can't they just buy him out 3-4 years down the road?

Not with out it counting against the cap for years.

Theres only two compliance buy outs, and if used, have to be used by the end of next year. If the Hawks think they can just place him on LTIR, they have another thing coming.

Hossa has a lot of miles on him, this decision might come back and bite them sooner then later.

Thanks.

Was their only option to buy him out this year to avoid that? Obviously, a lot of $$$ (ala VL) involved in that and a beating in the press from the writers/fan approval.

They could next year.. No longer after that.

I think those thinking of that are thinking way too much doom and gloom outcome. Sure bad health is gonna be hand in hand with Hoss at this point but his skills still will likely be quality as he goes on. A sudden retirement or break down isn't still 3 years in the making.

They would have had to have bought him out this season or next. This season would not be an option due to the fact that he is injured and likely going to require surgery. Since each team only gets two buy outs, they will not be able to buy him out anymore. Not a bad thing at all IMO.

As far as what happens down the road, I think that at some point the league is going to revisit the rule on retiring players. I think you will see that portion of the rule go away, especially if the player retires due to injury.

Question: I thought there were only two buyouts TOTAL for a team over the next two years? Didn't we just blow our wad and use both of them?

Or is it two per year over the next two years, aka we have two more next year?

Yes they used both... No more compliance buyouts.

Outside of the Hossa situation there's no other player it'd been worth holding onto for.
