EAST AURORA, NY -- The second annual NHL playoff "Beard-a-thon" raised over $300,000 for NHL team charities during the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Across the nation, over 6,000 hockey fans participated in a great hockey tradition and raised money for local causes.
Participants in the Beard-a-thon vowed to grow and maintain a playoff beard during the duration of their team's run in the NHL Playoffs. Beard growers invited family, friends, and business associates to pledge their playoff beards. Fans who were unwilling, or unable, to grow a playoff beard could also pledge their favorite NHL players.
For the second consecutive year, the Pittsburgh Penguins led all NHL teams and raised $91,000 for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. The fans of the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks raised $41,000 for Chicago Blackhawks Charities, while the fans of the Washington Capitals raised over $38,000 for Washington Capitals Charities.
Individually, Peter Luukko, President and COO of Comcast Spectacor led all beard growers by raising $7,175 for Flyers Charities. In second place was last year's top fundraiser, Ken Casey. Ken, who is also the bassist and singer for the Dropkick Murphy's, raised $6,360 to support the Boston Bruins Foundation.
According to Cenergy's Principal, John Cimperman, "Once again, hockey fans demonstrated that their passion and loyalty is second to none. During the past two seasons, NHL fans have raised over $600,000 for local charities."
