The Fourth Period :: Chicago Blackhawks :: Hawks looking to move Hjalmarsson?

With a significant amount of money dedicated to their blueline corps, the Chicago Blackhawks could end up moving one of their many defensemen.

According to the Edmonton Journal, the Hawks are looking to trade rearguard Niklas Hjalmarsson and his $3.5 million annual cap hit.

Hjarlmarsson, 23, registered three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 80 games with the Blackhawks this past season, along with 39 penalty minutes.

Meanwhile, the Hawks will be looking to re-sign forward Tomas Kopecky to a new multi-year contract.

Kopecky can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Im fine with moving Hammer...he is a sopel-esque player that makes about 1-1.5 too much

I would only resign pecker if its for under 1.25 per year

Exactly. TKO just doesn't fit the Hawks. He tries so hard but he isn't talented at all.

I'm glad they're doing this. I know they were high on him last year (as was I), but the guy's game has regressed and he's just not worth the money.

And I like keeping Kopecky around. The guy plays hard.

tbh, i dont think he really regressed, I think we just found out what type of player he actually is, which as I put above is a Sopel-esque player...good shot blocker, good on PK

this time last year i was saying no way we can let hammer go. This time this year im saying it would be a good move to let him go. We have good young d men ready to play (Leddy is the man) and getting rid of his contract could be very valuable to making the team a strong contender next year. Kopsucky i could care less either way. He is a decent player as long as his contract is the same as this years.

Hammer is 10X better in 5v5 than Sopel is though. Sopel is a huge liability in anything but the pk. Hammer does need to seriously work on his passing though. He's pretty brutal. I could live with him being traded I guess.

He regressed in that ever since he almost killed Jason Pominville, he maybe threw one or two big hits the rest of the year.

Hjalarmasson is a strong skater and last year he showed he was more than capable of throwing the body around. His physical game was a real nice counterpoint to the way Campbell plays, but it really disappeared this year and he became not much more than a shot blocking defensive d-man (like you said).

Anyways, now that Rafalski has retired- hopefully Detroit will give the Hawks a call about Nik.

I doubt he would go to detroit...

I agree that after that Pominville hit happened, he changed the way he played...maybe the NHL's discipline system finally worked? :elephant:

I am in agreement to trade Hammer because I think his trade value isn't going to get any higher if we keep him. (It's kinda like the Buff situation), but I personally don't like the idea of keeping Kopecky. I think he's more of a liability than an asset. He has to be the worst skater on the team, along with Scott.

Kopecky, Scott, and Stalberg all have the same problem...they have hands made of stone......
