Hawks recall Ben Smith

I could see this conversation going on:



Stan: "Hey Q, since Hossa is out, which guy from Rockford should we call up to play 8 minutes tonight with Fernando"?



Q: "How about that Ben Smith kid?"



Stan: "OMG I never thought of him. Make sure you get the video camera out so we can get the expression on his face when we go from telling him Bolland will be his center to Pisani being his other linemate!"



Q: "Oh it'll be funnier then when we told the team we were bringing up Cullimore and that he was seriously going to play!"

I don't understand this, at all. Why not Pirri, Beach, Makarov, Klinkhammer? What does Ben Smith bring to the team? They're going to have him playing fourth line minutes, so it doesn't matter, or what?

It was mentioned during the game last night that Smith has been one of the best players in Rockford of late playing on the same line as Makorov and I don't remember who else.

If that's the case, it sure didn't translate to last night's game. I thought he sucked...

I thought he had a number of good shifts against MIN. However, Q only gave him 3 of his 17 shifts in the 3rd period.

Wow, I am really surprised by everyone's responses. I could have sworn most people here would like this guy. He was a key part of a strong Boston team over the last few years and looks to be a fast, strong, albeit small forward with a decent career. I was really happy to see the Hawks picked him up. While I know we have a log jam of similar forwards in the farm system I hope he continues to progress and I could easily see guys like him, Morin, and Kaner be successful small forwards with the Hawks and in this league for years to come.



Let's not pull a bierboy and judge a prospect on one single call up. This kid is a leader and a point producing top 6 forward. He just has to be given the opportunity at the pro level to prove it.

I think he's been great.. seems to have a better hockey sense than Skille. My apologies, but I have a hard time making excuses for Skille anymore. I've defended him for a long time, but the more time that goes by the more he reminds me of Salmelainen. He's finally been given his chance to break into the big leagues and all he can do is skate too fast and try to split defenders and fall down. Seriously... at LEAST once per game, but I've seen his move as many as three times in a single game. The boy's got all kinds of potential but absolutely no finish whatsoever. Le sigh. Sorry for total sidetrack............. I like Ben Smith. There.

I am not quite clear why Smith was re-assigned back to Rockford. I thought he did a decent job in his short stint here? Sometimes Q and the staff sure do moves that are real head scratchers.
