Blackhawks Sign F Brandon Segal | Committed Indians

According to his agent on Twitter late Wednesday afternoon, the Blackhawks have signed right wing Brandon Segal.

Segal, 28, was originally a fourth round pick of the Predators in 2002. Listed at 6’2 and 215 pounds, he played in 46 games with the Dallas Stars last year, registering 10 points (five goals, five assists) and piling up 90 hits.

He has 22 points in 92 career NHL games.

The roster is now overflowing in Chicago, where Segal will join Daniel Carcillo, Jamal Mayers, John Scott, Ben Smith and Marcus Kruger in a heated training camp battle.

Kruger and Smith have been shown a lot of respect by the organization, but the veterans will certainly get every opportunity to add sandpaper to the Blackhawks lineup.

Perhaps the bigger question nobody is asking is why GM Stan Bowman continues adding players. Could there be some concern with the recovery of Bryan Bickell’s wrist? We’ll see.

I don't understand this. Why do the Hawks want another forward?

Depth. I am sure he is on a two-way contract and will most likely start in the AHL. The Blackhawks are well under the 50 contract limit so this is a nice move. If a guy like Carcillo/Mayers goes down with an injury, Segal knows his role and could fit in nicely. Decent move, not a big impact at all right now and hopefully it won't be - but better safe than sorry.

Yeah. I figured he would be in the AHL. That makes sense. I can understand wanting depth just in case Mayers gets hurt or Carcillo gets suspended/hurt.

Also, I don't believe there is any question over Bickell's wrist. I have not seen one report that has said so, and I personally saw him golfing in July. If he is good enough to swing a golf club...I'd think his wrist is good to go. I don't understand why they would toss something like that in there, sort of irresponsible.

Was that from when he got cut by a skate in the playoffs?

Correct, vs the Canucks. He tried to play with it but then eventually had to get surgery during the series. I haven't heard of any other wrist issue with him or any set back.

Awesome, could be a signing just for Rockford. Segal has had past stints here.

Rockford is going to be very good this year. Denault and McNeill look like they'll be good. Shaw should be good in the bottom six. Maybe Salak will be goalie. Segal down there. Maybe Kruger for a few games. Should be good.

Just a FYI, McNeill is too young for the AHL. He will either be in the NHL (not likely) or returned to his Juniors team. Same with Danault I believe.

They changed an age rule last year, I think it 18 or 19 to play in the season now.

Oh duh. I knew that. I don't know what I was thinking. I was just thinking about all the good prospects we have. McNeill will probably go back to his juniors team and be the captain. I read something about it awhile back.

I thought that was only if you didn't play in canadian juniors? I know Olsen, Leddy, and Morin were exceptions to the rule. Danault and McNeil both play in juniors up in Canada. Hell, I could be wrong though...I have been before.

Maybe that's what it was, not 100% sure, either way those guys mentioned above should probably go back to juniors as there wont be much room in Rockford. I don't want to hurt their development by getting 4th line healthy scratch minutes.

Yea, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. McNeil and Danault will most likely be with their juniors team.
