Bad news for the Cubs 1st round pick, Hayden Simpson is probably out for the rest of the summer with mono. He was expected to play for Boise but was injured and now has this. I was really looking forward to see what he has to offer thru the minor league levels. The Cubs reached with this pick and now he wil be cosider a BIG bust. But, I hope after a year he will turn good.

Twitter / Brian Murphy: #Cubs 1st round pick Hayde ...

Thoughts?

That's what I would think, it's not a lasting effect but Wilken is making it seen way worse that it should be....or it is worse than what they're saying.

But Wilken is the one saying all these notes about Hayden. The one who drafted him, so that's why I'm looking a bit more into it.

i wasn't aware of that. he might be worth listening to about some stuff, but if he thinks that simpson won't be healthy come september, he's either loony or clearly has mono confused with liver disease.

Mono can linger. Casey Kotchman got knocked out for the season because of it and Jed Lowrie has been out all season w/ it

There is no point rushing him back for Boise short season is all Wilkens is trying to say. He'll most likely be ready to roll for Arizona Fall League or Winter Ball. He'll still be on target like a few of the top picks who won't sign til on or around August 15th anyway. Players like Bryce Harper for example probably won't play any pro ball til fall league. There's no need to panic as he's not needed anytime soon and will still get plenty of time and opportunity to develop.

My expectations aren't very high on him. He doesn't have a great secondary pitch (Sounds like someone in AAA...) and his stuff is average

You're absolutely right. He needs to develop secondary pitches. His ceiling may be a 4 or 5 at the big league level. It's really hard to judge how he is as a pitcher v thrower having played D-2 baseball as well. He was quite successful at that level, but how that will translate is difficult to predict at all. Holding him out for the summer because of the mono is the best step the Cubs can take right now. It's not as if he's needed anytime soon.

One of my relatives had mono.

Didn't recover fully for almost a year.

He was out due to a viral infection and it turned into mono. So it could be worse.
