Well, there's not much else to say, you summed it up pretty well. Hejda definitely earned his suspension though. His hit on Kruger wasn't necessary, and he clearly went out of his way to do it.

Bertuzzi didn't deserve a suspension. The call on the ice was a reactionary call and it was fine.

All the head shot business is fucked. Anytime you implement rule changes mid season- problems will occur. Nobody is on the same page and nobody really knows the extent of damage that occurs from said head shots. The whole Crosby case is shit- he wasn't taken out by horrible suspendable hits... so what do you do then? Figure out a way to eliminate all physical play? Or should you re-evaluate the way concussions and their symptoms are considered? Nobody knows.

Currently, it's all bullshit. Nobody really knows anything, but people are afraid of the possibilities and it's effecting the game in a negative way.

:nope: This doesn't reflect a problem with the head shot rule. It reflects the retardation that is Colin Campbell.

This is a very true statement when it comes to Campbell.

Wow, really? I love physical play as much as the next guy, but throwing elbows at a guys head is just chicken shit. Guys didn't used to go high, because the knew someone was going to skate across the ice and kick the shit out of them. Now, with the Special person instigator rule, guys cannot afford to cost their team a penalty to keep the game cleaned up.

Injuries like Crosby's are going to happen on clean hits, but that doesn't mean that dirty shots to the head shouldn't be taken out of the game. Coming in with your elbow up high should get you a suspension plain and simple.

I never said I like head shots or dirty hits.

I just think the NHL doesn't know what to do about them right now and even after the GM meeting in Florida, NOBODY is really on the same page. The refs on the ice are calling bizarre penalties (the Chara hit was a 5 minute interference call? what the hell is that?) and punishments are still being tied to severity of injuries sustained whether anyone will admit it or not.

Currently, the system is fucked. It's all brought on by an overreaction to concussions (you want to protect everyone-ok fine) which is a questionable reaction itself.

The NHL wants to take out headshots? Automatic 5 game suspension for a first offender and go up from there. If it's an accidental contact (kinda like the Bertuzzi one)- TOUGH SHIT. Players get penalized for high sticking if it's an accident, right? Do the same thing with headshot suspensions. Let every player know that they have to be in control of their body when it comes to blows to the head.

Would my proposed situation take a lot of physicality out of the game? Absolutely- people would be scared shitless to deliver hits. But hey, it's ALL about player safety, isnt it?

It's all a load of shit.

It seems to me that the NHL freaked when Air Canada threatened to pull their advertising dollars if the NHL didn't do something about all the hits to heads. That came after the Chara hit on Max Pacioretty.

I agree that everything is wildy inconsistent now and it has to leave players wondering what exactly is legal or not. I suppose it's not all that different than what the NFL was doing to defenders last season.

^ Exactly, any hit to the head the NHL should suspend the player, no questioning or investigating should be done.
