Hey guys, I'm officially moving to Chicago, as I'll be going to school downtown to Columbia University for video editing.

My reason I made this thread is, I'd like to know if anyone knows anything about apartments or finding a cheap place to live. I'm not interested in living on the dorms (not homophobic but I'd be guaranteed to live with a *** person due to it being a private arts school).

I should have a potential roomate with me as well. I'm looking for a place that runs around $900-$950 with utilities in a decent neighborhood around the train so I can get to school everyday.

Whatever experiences you guys had/have with living downtown feel free to mention. Thanks guys.

hey dude i know a ton of people that went to columbia, i went to music school at roosevelt and lived in the UC for 3 years(that place sucks good idea about staying out of dorms)

living in the loop is fucking expensive as **** and in my opinion not that awesome... everything closes down after 5 so you end up traveling just to party. Your best bet is to look someone else almost all the neighborhoods are pretty legit and a lot more fun then living in the loop.. for 900-950 you could have a seriously balling apartment somewhere like wicker park or bucktown also pilson is getting big. and only be about a 20 min ride on the blue line away from campus( not sure i forgot what building the film stuff was at for columbia.) or look at the northern neighborhoods.

anyways i lived in the south loop for 3 years it was a fucking blast but once i moved out of the loop thats when i really had some fun. its a lot cheaper.

if you have any questions just hit me up

Are you talking 900-950 per person or total per month?

I'm living in Rodger's Park (northern neighborhood) after living in the Gold Coast (Michigan Ave. area) last year, and there's a definite, noticeable difference. I mean, it's still pretty safe, but I felt more comfortable walking alone downtown at night than I do up here.

As far as rent goes, I'm paying $500 for a three bedroom, one bathroom. Utilities are like another 30, as is cable/ internet through Comcast. Heat is included. Water, gas, electricity, isn't.

The only thing I can say with 100% certainty is that do no live near Chicago and State. There's a McDonalds there that is always the target of flash mobs and shit. I lived 2 blocks from there on Pearson and all you hear is sirens.

$900/month? Forget downtown. Rentals down there start at at least $1500. $900 might get you a 1BR in Chinatown, Armour Square or Bridgeport. Those areas are easily accessible to downtown via both CTA and the new 35th Street Metra Rock Island station.

Also, ask the admissions office if there's any apartments that offer discounts to students.

Thanks man, sounds like I'll be trying to live around Wicker or Bucktown. I'll look into that. Good advice.

Well, if I end up living on my own, I want to look for the cheapest possible, but my loans would probably enable me to go from around $700-$850.

If I get a roomate, we could look for around $950 for rent+utilities.
