Interesting and amusing article about movie symbolism.

Some are painfully obvious (aliens, Vietnam) but some are played a little better (the big lebowski- decline of masculinity... metaphorical castration)
From the article- The "Big" Lebowski, meanwhile, who clearly likes to present himself as the most powerful man in the movie, is literally powerless from the waist down. He's married to a trophy wife he can't control, is living off an allowance provided by his daughter Maude, and even his prior wife appears to have been the true wealth and power behind the Lebowski fortune. In the original screenplay, his last words after Walter drops him on the floor are "You bullies! You and these women! You won't leave a man his fucking balls!"

Looking at the big lebowski, a lot of scenes and story lines make one **** of a lot more sense;

The scene in the bowling alley was funny as hell..... but the underlying theme makes it funnier.... Walter, the impotent rage junkie, is taunted by antagonists who happen to clearly have the upper hand in bowling.... and balls.....

Random side note, I read earlier today that Jeff Bridges granddaughter calls him "dude-pa". I thought that was fairly awesome.

Haven't read the article yet, but in college I did a paper on the symbolism of Pulp Fiction. It didn't go over well.

In a nutshell, what was the overriding message?
There is plenty to latch on to in a tarantino movie.

If there are any Kubrick fans here grounded in realism, then this movie should either anger or amuse:

Kubrick's Odyssey: Secrets Hidden in the Films of Stanley Kubrick; Part One: Kubrick and Apollo

"In Kubrick's Odyssey, Part I, Kubrick and Apollo, author and filmmaker, Jay Weidner presents compelling evidence of how Stanley Kubrick directed the Apollo moon landings. He reveals that the film, 2001: A Space Odyssey was not only a retelling of Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick's novel, but also a research and development project that assisted Kubrick in the creation of the Apollo moon footage. In light of this revelation, Weidner also explores Kubrick's film, The Shining and shows that this film is, in actuality, the story of Kubrick's personal travails as he secretly worked on the Apollo footage for NASA."

Sorry, didn't see this until now, and you're not going to like my answer.

This paper was written 13 years ago, so I can't say I really remember much. A lot of it had to deal with themes of good vs. evil. I'm fairly sure I argued that Vincent and Jules were actually the good guys. I remember reading/finding something about all of the digital clocks reading 6:66.

There was a documentary on the Shining that basically said the same things.

EDIT: oops, should have read the actual paragraph you quoted.

The combination on the briefcase was 666 as well.

Side note: my wife got me the wallet from the movie that says "Bad Motherfucker" for fathers day. Just waiting on the shipping.

...Tapatalking
