A tipster passed along a friend-of-a-friend type story, but one that was plausible enough (and, candidly, interesting enough) to share. All appropriate caveats apply. The story goes like this: apparently, the Cubs had the “highest” offer for Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig, who ultimately went to the Dodgers for seven years and $42 million (there were indeed reports that the Dodgers’ offer was not the highest bid, as crazy as that sounds). But, new owner Magic Johnson put on the hard sales pitch to Puig and his handlers, and he decided to opt for Los Angeles – I’m sure you can imagine what such a conversation might sound like. The other interesting tidbit?

So bid higher for Puig, 2nd for Cespedes, 2nd for Darvish...

We haven't won in over a century.... Nobody wants to play for us probably. We are like the Clippers.

This rumor does little to show people are unwilling to play for the Cubs. When the time comes to buy players, I think there will be plenty that will sign.

That seemed to be the big reason Fuki picked us over a couple of other teams that actually offered more cash.

If I was these guys and I thought I was a good player and the team was headed in the right direction I would love to be part of the Cubs team that FINALLY delivers the championship.

I think the Cubs antiquated facilities are far more likely to keep free agents away then "the curse". At the end of the day money talks 99% of the time when it comes to free agent, and I am not worried about that when the foundation is laid.

yeah, that was my thought as well. If the Dodgers offered more money per season, on 2 less seasons, the player would be smarter to go there, especially if t's a 6+ year deal...hit FA sooner.

I had no intention of implying that, I think it is great that we have been up there for so many talented international players. The one player we signed was ranked right behind Puig by BA too (don't remember name, it was a few days ago though).

And even if I did mean that, mentioning Darvish wouldn't help my case since he could only sign a contract with the highest bidder as a player posted by his NPB team.

Glad he chose the Dodgers. He doensn't have the upside to warrant that type of money IMO

My sentiments exactly. I also wonder what extras the Dodgers put into their offer that the Cubs did not. Also, He signed for $42M over 7 years. Maybe the Cubs offer was similar to what they offered Soler... 9 years... but at $45M? That's a mil less per.

There's a lot of stuff here to consider, and we don't have the information right now. For all we know, Puig's agent may have told him to stray away fomr the Cubs because he might have an easier shot at eventually making the Dodgers' OF than the Cubs with Jackson, Szczur, Almora, Soler, Lake (who could end up in CF if the team extends Castro this winter and Vitters sticks at 3B), Vitters (if he doesn't stick at 3B) in the Cubs future plans. I don't see a lot of MLB-ceiling OFs in the Dodgers' system.

Not your money, if the team wants to spend big of talent, overpay or not, I'm down for it. Because Ricketts is cheap and everything :troll:

There's a difference between spending for the sake of spending, and spending because it's a wise investment.

This isn't either tbh. This is spending and knowingly overpaying to acquire as much talent as possible.

There is a limit to which one should overpay though. The Cubs obviously reached their limit in some manner because Puig signed elsewhere and I am pretty happy that happened.
