Any of you make it a habit to try and seek out hole in the wall restaurants with great food? It's sort of a hobby of mine, usually at lunch time. Found a new Thai place today tucked away in a shitty strip mall. The food was fucking amazing...probably the best massaman I've ever had in my life.

Jody's in Joliet just one block west of St. Joseph's Hospital.
The inside is like a decorated 50's diner
The food is mom and pop hot dog place
Fresh cut fries with extras like Five Guys
The Cajun Rib Eye with extra Cajun Spice is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had.

Have to recommend it.

I love doing this. But, alas, working nights and only getting 30 minutes for lunch doesn't give me many opportunities to do it now. We usually try to find some new breakfast joint on Saturday or Sunday

Yup, I love doing that. I use my Yelp app for assistance, though.

I do the same a lot...a combination of Google reviews, Yelp and TripAdvisor usually.

Yelp is tough. Most of the reviewers are snobby and only give good reviews if they are given free things. For instance my wife's restaurant had a Yelp party (they said they would give negative reviews if they didnt) and gave out a huge free dinner. Afterwards somebody said that they were unhappy with their choice of order and said if they had another Yelp party, they would definitely give 5 stars. The owner ended up saying screw that.

At any rate, there is a lot of politics in professional Yelp reviewing. Best to check many sources.

One random day my wife and I had to go to the bank to close one of our accounts. As we were leaving we witnessed a lady in the parking lot back her car up into another car. We sat and waited to see if she would leave a note or not and she eventually did.

We went up to the pizza place next to the bank to see if we could figure out who’s car it was and it turned out it was the owner of the restaurant. We started talking with a few of the workers and noticed that the food smelled pretty good. So we picked up a menu to take home with us and ended up going to eat there either that night or the next day.

We’ve tried a number of different things on their menu including their pizza and have yet to have a bad meal. The great thing is that it’s only minutes away from the campground we stay at every weekend. The staff knows us by name when we walk in.

I know of a FANTASTIC Italian restaurant located near Circle Campus, but isn't advertised. They don't want the college kids in there. So you have to know about it to eat there. I've seen the Chicago's Chief of police eating in there, aldermen, local Chicago News anchors...
