Home filtration water????

I remember a couple of you talking about water filtration, i just dont remember which thread it was.

Currently we buy 10L (roughly 2.6 gallons) containers for 4 dollars a piece. We generally go through one every 1-2 days. The tap water in the mountains here is really suspect and tastes like shit............. this is coal country and theres also a coal power plant not too far from here. so who knows what gets released into the system.

Ive been looking at those home 4L 750w distillers. Running costs would be a lot cheaper than buying those 10L bottles. Even cheaper if we ran two of these at night during off peak. Initial costs of these are about 120-150 AUD a piece. We spend about 80 a month on bottled water on the low end.. so that initial cost would be made up fairly quick if the machines last.

I've also seen different stage under sink osmosis systems from 120-250 AUD for lower end models. Im not sure how often the filters would need replaced and the cost associated with that per year. I have seen replacement filters for 3 stage as low as 20 bucks. Universal membranes are 17-20 for 50/75/100 GDP models.

I do know it will require some basic plumbing and new tools i should already own. We have older copper pipes that id have to update a lil, but, i could bypass the update if i just used a saddle valve.

also seen a 8 stage 24l ceramic/carbon system for 50 bucks. replacement filters be about 25 bucks for 1 or 2 depending on da vendor. Recommend replacement @ 5000L.

any thoughts

This is not in proper Aussie language.

You’re gonna have to wait for Crystallas to reply.

The wife wants to get those ceramic/carbon gravity ones. I found a deal on the 16 L (9L of filtered in the bottom and 7 in the top chamber) for about 40 ozzie bucks, with extra filters included. My issue was the slow rate of filtration people seem to complain about. To compromise, we agreed to get two of em. 80 bucks for roughly 2+ years of filtration beats paying up to 100 dollars a month for some store bought water that was probably filled up with a tap anyway. Replacement filters will then run about 25 dollars a year for two.

How remote is the area you live in? Sounds amazing to me.

we arent really that remote imo .. its like a country suburb..or like an english village.. about 2k people.... there are a couple of small towns like ours 10-15 mins away.. but its about 15 minutes to a real town of about 20k with all the main shops, small hospital, train station etc etc.. 30 minutes the other way to a bigger town of 40k... its definitely a haul going into sydney cbd now.. so i dont go..

we do have a local butcher, baker, pub, mini overpriced iga type grocer, gas station, a questionable antique, post office, gp, a couple of takeaways around the corner on our 'main street' ....but thats it..

we do have a really small lake about a 2km (1.2 miles) walk from my house...itll be part of me 5km a day route.....they stock it with trout and bass.... no motorized boats allowed........ just a quiet modest sleepy country town..a place we wanted to raise our kid.... where the criminals steal trees.. we could have gotten a house with a lake view.. but we got more space for less money. i can see it if i walk around the corner if i really cared that much about it..

we're about 3000 feet above sea level..

Gorgeous pics! Post more if you have them. I love seeing plants, buildings, scenery of places I've never been.
Nor, probably will ever be able to.

My take is, you test your water, then you figure out what solution is best.

Otherwise it's just guessing.

Exactly this, you need to know what is in your water before you can make the right choice on what to filter to get. Might just need a carbon block/sediment filter setup.
