How close are the Bears to being competitive?

I have always said next year was when “the window” opens and they wouldn’t truly be competitive until then.

I still feel that way. Build the lines some more this offseason. Get a new HC. CW keeps improving.

It’s not a given. They still have to make the right moves. But nothing that I’ve seen so far has dissuaded me from thinking good times are a year away.

Am I wrong?

(For the purpose of this discussion I will define competitive as a team that can make the playoffs and have a shot at winning a game)

If I am wrong how far away are the Bears? Total tear down stage? Two years?

Most important is coaching. If they can fix both lines than they can legit compete. Might take several years though

Not a tear down at all. The offensive line has to be addressed first and foremost. The D-line is a nice to have, but being a Bear fan teaches you not to wish for too much. The Head Coach needs to be changed, and since the Bears have proven incompetent at identifying the right person, that's not as easy as it might be for any other franchise.

The team is right there - set at the skill positions, in possession of the franchise quarterback, ready to be playoff-competitive with a few bodies on the offensive line. But Everflus must be fired. He will continue to cost the Bears games and hold them back from success as long as he's here. He's gotta go.

Next year, but only with a new coaching staff.

I think it's already been shown that a new staff with the right concepts/system can turn around a team in one offseason. See WAS and HOU.

I have 110% gotten on the new coach bus. Yes. This is a must.

My question is more about the talent (players) on the team

A good coaching staff, and an offseason devoted to the offensive line away. They really aren't that far. Ineptitude makes them look farther away than they are.

Coaching has lost them how many games this season? 2-3?

A different coach is 6-4 maybe 7-3

Agree absolutely. Normally the new coaching staff (if they are top shelf) take two years to really take off. Keep in mind, not only the offense but the defense and special teams need to mesh in new system..

Two plays go different and this fan base is night and day different now. The Bears are in the playoffs as a 6 or 7 seed and life is good. Just crazy how small the margins of error are in the NFL.

I think there is plenty of talent. I like the RB combo actually. I think DJM and Odunze are great skill players to build around a QB with. Obviously you have to fix the OL and DL for that matter, but there's always going to be holes to fill.

The defense should be OK, like middle of the road, but I don't expect great things from them moving forward.

They just can't blow the HC choice. That's all there is to it. I think the rest can fall in place if we make that decision correctly. I would hope that Poles gets his head out of his ass and addresses the OL... and even a bit of the DL. But honestly, coaching is by far the most important decision to be made.

And given the above, I'm not super excited about any HC candidates. None are obvious or flawless.

While I would like the bears to get an offensive head coach, I don't want to see the defense go from respectable to royally sucking ass. Is that too much to ask?

I mean it is possible, but do the Bears brain trust have the balls to hire a defensive minded HC that brings in a real OC?

One offseason if the OL and DL are upgraded.

I lean coaching. Bears burned some totally winnable games early in the season because Waldron was like a deer caught in the headlights. yesterday wasn't a stat monster game for passing, but Williams operated a lot better with Brown calling plays. kind of like the promise he showed back in September renewed. offensive line ticked up a little with addition by subtraction I guess. if Poles is smart he'll let Jenkins go. that's some Chris Williams level shit. I didn't deeply analyze the injury list but I think a lot of the defense's problem now is guys are out. still, they held the Packers 'juggernaut' in check. alas, another totally winnable game lost because of bad decisions.

At least two drafts and a different coaching staff away from the playoffs.
