How did you feel about Michael Jordan not being in video games?

Somebody bringing up Sega Dreamcast got me thinking about when I was younger MJ wasn't in any of the basketball games.

NBA Jam, NBA Live, other renditions of basketball titles. I forget the reasoning behind why he wasn't in them but how did you perceive that?

I always loved to use the Bulls but without MJ it was just BLAH.

Yeah. I always hated using "Roster Player" #99.

Something always seemed wrong about that.

Barkley wasn't in all of the games either.

Wasn't someone not in the MLB games either? What makes them not in the game, do they get to decide or what's the deal with it?

I'll sound like a broken record here, but I have been a PC Gamer for a long time. There were always good homebrew Jordan mods.

Bonds wasn't in many MLB games, they named him something lame, and made him white! LOL!! Easy fix, nonetheless.


ACTUALLY, I can think of one game that didn't have Jordan, that I know has a patch somewhere, but I never tried it... NBA Jam TE!

I remember playing Live 99 and wondering who that Player 99 was. Then my friend told me that Jordan didn't want his name or likeness on the game and that's why he wasn't on it.

I was always annoyed at "Roster Player" being Jordan, but I dealt with it. I didn't actually own an NBA game until I think Live 2000 and Jordan was in that. So I guess overall I wasn't too bothered. xD

I think it was all about greed...I'm not bashing Jordan or anything, but I think he wanted way more money from nintendo and sega to have him in the games. Than they were willing to pay him..I thought it was kind of selfish especially for kids who wished he was in the game, but then again the God of basketball probabely deserved more for his name in games than the other players..I could be wrong about my my theory but oh well...I used to cut out the no name 99 jordan and make Pip the lead guy..I used to kick the computers ass with pip as the main guy..I used to score almost 40 to 50 points with pip in nba showdown and live in the 90s...

I could score 40 to 50 points with Kirk Hinrich in Live and 2k.

I've also had Keith Bogans outscore Kobe Bryant in 2k11.

I played a lot of NBA Jam, but usually used P-Funk + Gugliotta with Golden State.

Googs could fucking drain 3s while Funk did all the dirty work. Unstoppable. And, when Googs would get too beat up, I'd bring in Spree to choke the opponent out.

Never really missed Jordan.

MJ & Barkley were not in games after 1992 because they opted out of the licensing agreement that EA sports reached with the NBA. The last game I remember owning that had MJ in it was Team USA Basketball (a great game btw). He was also in Lakers vs. Celtics, Bulls vs. Lakers, & of course Jordan vs. Bird. I still own all 3 of those games as well as my original Genesis, which I bust out from time to time.

I enjoyed it as amusing that they were out of the games.. except it wasn't as cool with NBA Jam, Having to roll out Scotty and Horace or BJ, lame.

I like how the Parcells and Belichick coaching tree refuses to let their names and likeness be in the NFL games.

If you want to play older games with Jordan I suggest Bulls vs Blazers and Bulls vs Lakers.

The graphics are stunningly jaw dropping.

Or if you hate yourself and feel the need to be punished then Chaos in The Windy City is the game for you.

That latter was slow as molasses BTW compared to Tecmo NBA/Super NBA Basketball (which also had Jordan and the best controls for an NBA game until the 2K series). MJ was also featured, in a Wizards and Bulls uniform in NBA Street 2.
