Okay, so I have an interview coming up. It would be a promotion within. Before I get into the question.... let me break it down.

I started fro the bottom a year ago. I reported to "Bill." Bill reported to "Jane." Jane reported to "Bob."

6 months in, I got promoted to the same position Bill has, but in a different department. Jane recently left, and now I'm applying for her job, which means I'd be Bill's boss.

I know for a fact that one of the questions will be, "Given that you were reporting to Bill just 6 months ago, how do you think you/he will handle you being the boss now?" Or some variation of that. Or maybe, what conversation I would have with him about now being his boss.

I've been going over answers in my head, but I can't think of anything solid. I've just never been in this situation. What I would really want to say is, "Bill should just man the **** up and do his job." But I don't think that would be appropriate.

Well to answer "How do you think Bill will handle the situation" we would need to know Bill.

As for how you can say you would handle it.... I would tell them I intend to treat Bill with the respect I want my boss to treat me with and maybe mention that since I worked for Bill and I know him, I have a better perspective on him and the people working for him and what they need to be successful.

Always tell them what they want to hear:

"I have no doubt Bill will perform at the same professional level as I have in the past"...blah blah blah

Why are you asking us anyways?, didn't you ass kiss to get promoted already?...j/k.:)

In the past Bill and I had a strong professional relationship, which we've maintained today, even though we are now at the same level.

Based on this, I'm confident in both my own and Bills ability to do the task at hand in a professional manner. I do not see any potential conflict between the two of us. And should one arise, we would resolve it professionally and in the manner spelled out in the companies policies.

I would tell them that Bill won't be an issue as he refuses to work 21 Sundays a year ;)
