Cubs GM Jed Hoyer appeared on "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on ESPN 1000 today to discuss a number of topics, and ESPN Chicago provided a transcript of the hot stove related items. Unsurprisingly, Hoyer acknowledged that the team is unlikely to trade Alfonso Soriano before the season...

"I think that's unlikely [that Soriano will start the season with another team]," said the GM. "We don't want to do anything to hurt our pitchers (with his defense), but we do believe there's something left in Sori."

As many as eight clubs inquired about Soriano earlier this offseason (including the Orioles), and chairman Tom Ricketts has made it clear that they're willing to eat most of $54MM left on his contract to facilitate a trade. The 36-year-old outfielder hit .244/.289/.469 with 26 homers last season.

:rolling: at the mention of his defense

I don't understand why at this point of his career, they just don't move him back to second base, and play either Bryan LaHair out there and Rizzo at 1B or Brett Jackson. What are they worried about? Lowering his value? Can his value be lowered any more?

They can't move him to 2B because he used to suck there too and with his decreasing range it doesn't make sense to put a poor defender back at a premium position. The only place Soriano is moving, if they don't want to try him at 1B, is DH.

ah now CO maybe will believe that Fonzie is a terrible defender because "Theoyer" is always right.

LOL at CO trying to make a case for Fonzie as a good or even average defender

I honestly don't care where they play him since it won't matter for this season anyways.

In the same interview he said he is driving to spring training because of his dog. I was thinking about doing it but that drive is fning crazy long. I cant get 8 days off just to drive there and drive back. I will get to ST one of these years but defiantly cant this year.
