– A massive highway pileup being blamed on whiteout conditions killed at least three people and injured scores of others Thursday afternoon in Northwest Indiana, police and a coroner said.
LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan confirmed the three deaths and said the toll could rise because cars were trapped under semitrailers.
"It's looking grim. There may be many more fatalities," Sullivan told WLS-TV in Chicago.
Coroners from surrounding counties were asked to go to the scene.
Indiana State Police said I-94 eastbound was expected to be closed until Friday as cranes and wreckers cleared the road of around 15 tractor-trailers and 15 passenger vehicles. School buses were summoned to keep stranded travelers warm.
Sullivan estimated that 15 to 20 people with lesser injuries had been taken to a LaPorte hospital.
The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Thursday near Michigan City.
Photos of the scene showed at least a dozen tractor-trailers jammed across the width of the highway near an overpass. Some passenger vehicles were sandwiched in the wreckage.
Dixie Juchcinski told WMAQ-TV that the accident occurred during a snowstorm.
"When we first came to a stop, it was a complete whiteout," Juchcinski said. "It was kind of a surprise to us because we could only see one or two cars in front of us."
Scary that people are still trapped in the wreckage.
I don't know what caused it to begin with but I do know I HATE that many semi-truck drivers seem to not give a shit about road conditions. They're driving huge vehicles and get paid by the mile so "**** it" I'll do 70 while everyone else is doing 50 and put a cloud of snow in their view.
Yup...8 trucks in the right lane all in a convoy...You approach in the left lane from the rear to pass em..The minute you get close to the last truck, he swings out in the left lane to pass in the method you describe.. 20 minutes later he finally clears the front truck and gets over back in the right lane.....I wish I had a dollar for every time that happened to me on I-65Best is on a 2 lane highway when 1 semi takes the left lane to pass another semi at 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000001 mph faster than the semi in the right lane in the middle of a rain storm or snow storm...... couldn't just slow down a little bit for a while could you?
naaah..mostly rednecksthose fuckin treehugger truck drivers these days.
btw, in case anyone still cares about the accident itself: 3 dead, 20+ injured

Back in the day, truck drivers were called "The Gentlemen Of The Highway" Today they're "The Morons Of The Highway"
I always call them road terrorists.
You may have watched that movie Joy Ride a few too many times
Possibly. And I had one nearly run me into Rend Lake during a thunderstorm so I don't love them![]()
Saw a couple fire trucks going down I-57 south after I passed 127th. I imagine they were heading over there.
"Hey fucktard, your speed limit is 10mph below mine.... even at 10 mph over you should be 15 mph slower than me.... wtf are you doing 75 mph down a highway in a semi for?"
That's one hell of a ride out to Michigan City from I-57 and 127th.
