Most people I know came out relatively unscathed. Worst was about 14 hours without power.

For the life of me I don't understand this. Lets sail a wooden ship right into a hurricane and hope for the best? Was it the adventure, the excitement, the chance to be like the Captain Morgan rum guy or Dos Equis' geezer? When did the Captain of that boat have his oh shit moment I wonder?

I can only guess that they thought it would be safer out to sea then be in harbor when the storm hit.

I think the fire in Queens is the scariest thing about this storm so far. 80 homes consumed. No telling how many people didn't escapt that. Predict the casualty count will soar over the next few days as they dig out of the rubble.
