The best friend I've ever had died this morning.

He was my very noisy quaker parrot I got in 1987 when I was ten years old.

No one squawking for me when he hears me get up. No more sharing pizza crust.

This is a shitty day guys.

That sucks dude, my condolences, no one likes losing a friend. If you'd like you can have my landlord's bird (upstairs neighbor). She makes a great alarm clock all day.

Cheer up.

23 years. That's tremendous.

Maybe that's typical for a parrot, but it's nothing to squawk at.

Meanwhile-- if you're up to it -- there are plenty of other critters needing help.

My neighbor has had birds all his life, his mom owned a bird store, I was shocked to find out how long they live, he said some in the 60's I think.

I'm very sorry for your loss. You were so lucky to have had your pal for such a long time.

What was his name?

Thanks guys.

His name was Snitch (or Snitchy) even though he never uttered a word.

A long time indeed to have such a good friend.

He was wild and not hand raised. I guess he figured I was a big goofy looking bird, so he picked me (or maybe it was the raisins I smuggled out of the cafeteria to give him after school the day after we got him), and was generally pretty hostile towards any other humans.

Beak so strong and sharp

Feathers so soft, bright, and green

Miss you dear bird friend

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an

animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet

goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our

special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of

food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and

vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong

again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times

gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small

thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left

behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly

stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his

eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group,

flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been

spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling

together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses

rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and

you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your

life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Thanks again guys.

I was out in SoCal for awhile visiting with friends and just got home yesterday.

Getting a long weekend away is just what I needed.

I still get that feeling every time I get home and open the door, anticipating the squawk, but then it's so quiet.

I have decided to do some reading on parrots. As great a friend Snitch was to me, I have kind of always wanted a tame parrot (not instead of course). I plan on doing some reading and research for quite awhile before I decide. I may be closer to making up my mind, say, June, after the repeat. It is a HUGE decision. I basically have to decide if I can/should spend maybe the rest of my life taking care of the feathered equivalent of a three year old child.

What I've read over the last day or so leaves me intrigued by the Eclectus parrots. Seems to be that they are a bit quieter and more independent than many other parrots. They're good talkers, and have cute soft voices like little kids. Also, unlike any other parrot, the males and females look totally different.

They are very pretty. You should get a pair so they can keep each other company.

As much as I love the Eclectus, I am almost pretty sure that I would not be the right person as a guardian to one. I don't think I want to make living arrangements for a bird after I die, who can say who's trustworthy 60 years from now?.

But anyway, I sure like these birdies (Senegal parrot):

These little guys seem pretty cool too (parrotlet):

Gosh, Hun, how much of a geezer are you that you think a bird would outlive you? Don't you want something you can cuddle and pet and play with?

I'm only 33, but many parrots live 50 years, 75 years, even 100 years in some cases. I mean, I had Snitchy for two thirds of my life, and he was caught in the wild and I don't really know how old he was when we got him. He may have lived 30 years or more. Add that to the fact that he was stolen out of the jungle, adapting to living with my crazy ass, and making it for 23 more years, I would say he was one tough little birdie motherfucker.

Before I get to rambling too much.....

You like the videos?

Sorry to hear of your loss buddy.

Sounds like you had a cool friend there.

And don't let the life span thing stop you from getting another bird.

Like someone else said, there a lots of little critters out there that need good owners and you sound like you'd make one really happy.
