just out of curiosity, if the context of the posts in the old IGT are still relevant to the old IGT, why close them? Just pin the current one, and unpin the old ones...

No offense, but I'm unclear as to what the difference it is.
I've been a moderator and an admin at some sites in the past, and even had to argue to lock thread that were obvious flame fests - but by and large I don't see that here. However I wouldn't say that are the multitude of locked threads that are the reason for that - it just seems like that the people posting in here generally are not like that.
I don't see what the problem with letting a thread die on its own actually is.
