alright guys, I'm currently a Sociology major and I'm definitely going to change it. I have no interest in Soc and I pretty much hate it. I loved Soc101 because it was interesting, easy, and fun but these other Soc classes suck and now I want nothing to do with it.

I'm thinking about changing my major to communications. Originally I was thinking about switching to Secondary Education but now I'm starting to want to go to the Communications route instead. I would like to major in PR related but I'm at a CC and there is no specialty for that so I'm assuming communication is the one I should switch my major to?

good move or bad move?

And also

Would I need a masters degree in order to get a job, or could I get a job immediately after I graduate and receive my bachelors? I need as a Sociology major you definitely need to get a masters degree and go through more schooling in order to get a job. It is essentially useless, is Communications degree the same?

Help me out brahs....

With Communications, a bachelors degree would get you a job. In this economy though, it's hard to tell what the job outlook may be like for a few years. A degree in Communications would give you a wide array of career possibilities so it's not a bad choice at all.

Best of luck!

Would you mind sharing your college experience and the degree you had and such? Communications is not like Sociology/Psychology where it is literally useless when you have the bachelors degree of it right?

Well I'm actually still in college myself. Haha. But I do know a few people who have graduated with Communications degrees and they are doing very well. One has a job doing sports radio for a college team and the other two are in minor league baseball radio networks. It's far from useless from everything I've seen and heard. It's all about who you know when you get ready to graduate.

I'm a Soc major right now, and I hate it as well (well just my Social Theory class), but I can't change because I've changed 4 times already (Phys Ed->Earth Science->Marketing->Journalism->Soc).

There are plenty of jobs for a Bachelors in Soc. If you think you need a Masters, then you might as well go to Law School, or get your Doctorate and become a professor, or get your Masters and become a Counselor for marriages, juveniles, etc. Sociology is a pretty broad field. You can get a job anywhere from management, human resources, a researcher for a business, a lot of communications jobs, social work and a ton of other stuff. I don't know where the misconception came from that these degrees were useless. If you don't interview well then all degrees are useless.

What is sociology? And what jobs can you get from it? Is this the degree you need to be a therapist or counselor?

Anyone can be a "counselor;" there's no degree required for that. A "therapist" holds a psychology or psychiatry degree (psychiatrists have medical training and can write prescriptions whereas psychologists cannot).

A sociologist is one who studies groups of people. They may be used by businesses and organizations.

My career test told me the perfect job for me is "marriage counselor" so there's no degree for that is what your saying? I never knew that thanks haha

No offense to Iago or any high school counselors here, but the counselors at my high school were useless.

None taken. Just as in any job, there are people who are great at their jobs and there are people who are lousy at their jobs.

I wasn't referring to those types of counselors, though. In order to land a job as a high school counselor, a Masters is most likely required.

Take it from somebody who's been done with school for almost four years -- graduating with a degree you enjoy is crucial. Not only does it make landing a career easier because you're engaged with the subject, but it makes the financial investment you put into college worthwhile.

My degree was in English (emphasis on creative writing and linguistics) with a minor in Ethnomusicology. I now work in the car industry as a financial manager. I was planning on staying in school to get my masters and PhD and teach college English, but I decided against the commitment you have to make for the next five years. I didn't want to be 30 and still be in school.

Either way, writing and music are still my passion. I've got my record collection and I write for here and still have my writing appear in other publications. It's about feeling comfortable with the commitment you make to school.

It is.

I think I could still get into the counseling program for grad school even with a com degree right?
