I had an inguinal hernia repaired a few years ago. Prior to that I walked around with it for over 20 years.
A chest cold with uncontrollable coughing finally did me in. In hindsight I would have gotten it fixed right away as it got progressively worse to the point where it was close to an emergency surgical fix. Also, because it got larger and larger, I had to get the traditional open (4" belt-line incision) vs. the much more common laparoscopic procedure they do now. The difference is 2 weeks off of work vs. 2 days.
The general surgeon told me I was the poster boy for how not to treat a hernia. I literally went from a ping pong ball to tennis ball sized protrusion... and because I had to get the zipper job, I also had complications that usually don't come with laparoscopy... things like bruising from nipple to knee and a nice large incision site seroma.
Long-term, I've had no problems other than an occasional bit of numbness around the upper groin area due to a procedure they did (ilioinguinal neurectomy) to avoid nerve entrapment with the mesh.
I asked the surgeon about recurrence and he told me it's less than 10%. I do a lot of heavy lifting... you just have to be smart about lifting and know your limitations. So, my advice... don't let your ballsack get stretched. Get a 2nd opinion or get-er-done. My 78 year-old father in law just got a lap inguinal done and he was up on his feet a day later.
