The Padres could well be into sell off mode going into 2024 if they don't think they can be a WS contender. Their biggest trade piece is of course Juan Soto. They are currently estimated to be about 25M over the CBT. Soto's estimated arbitration number is 32M. So let's let the fantasy crazy trade commence

3 Team Trade that will require multiple players to waive their NTCs.

Cubs get Soto and Yu Darvish from SD. Soto is a major impact bat with good numbers just about anywhere you look and Darvish has shown to be a TOR level pitcher when healthy on a very affordable contract. He's also familiar with the Cubs and the city.

Twins get Happ and Stroman from Chicago. Twins were 21st in MLB in OPS from LF in 23. Happ would be a marked improvement for them in that area. Stroman is mostly an add in and salary dump for the Cubs, but they also only have 4 starters listed under contract from 24. The piece they'd send would be minimal to them.

Padres get Morel, Wicks, Alcantara, Canario, and Gray from the Cubs and get CJ Culpepper from Minny. This gives the Pads a youth infusion in a mix of arms and OFs while getting them about 25M under the 24 CBT so they could afford to bring back Hader if they want or invest elsewhere. Jackson Ferris might also have to be added.

It would only add about 5M to the Cubs 24 CBT number and shouldn't hinder any other singings. At point it's focus on bringing back Bellinger and shoring up the pen as 3B can wait for a prospect to earn it. Potential line up for the Cubs if Belli is back is

Tachman DH
Hoerner 2B
Soto LF
Suzuki RF
Bellinger 1B
Swanson SS
Gomes C
Madrigal 3B
PCA CF

Rotation

Steele
Darvish
Taillion
Hendricks
Assad

If they decide to go past the CBT like I hope and sign Nola as well, he slots in at #2 and pushes Assad to the pen.

Probably not enough or realistic, but that's what fantasy trades are all about.

If the Cubs do pull any trades it will be along of the "for vet pen arm" type. It makes more sense for Jed to trade for a established set up with control that would cost him less than a equal level talent on the open market.

DUde, the Cubs aren't giving that up for two one year deals..... Take that trade value and reduce it by like 7 of the 10 people you have in there.

People need to put their trade ideas into actual trade analyzers first, lol

Went to one of those trade simulators and this is what it said was fair.

Cubs get Soto from SD
Twins get Happ and Stroman from CHI
Padres get Festa and Varland from MIN and Ferris and Gray from CHI.

Of course it also valued Morel for Soto almost straight up. So take that for what it is.

Yeah it isn't exact but it gives a general idea on trade fairness. The Morel for Soto fairness is likely due to salaries and Soto being much less control.
