was a guy named Marty Cooper at Motorola. Here is a picture of him in 1973 making the first public cell phone call walking down a street in New York City. Side note In the late 70s I made a couple of very minor business presentations to him and his team.

I'm surprised the guy is only worth $600 million. http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-businessmen/marty-cooper-net-worth/

You would think the inventor of the cell phone would be the richest man on the planet.

He made quite a bit. Not every inventor is an entrepreneur.

Good reminder thread Omelet.

Martin Cooper, Dennis Hayes, William Shockley, Federico Faggin.... all forgotten names that invented some of the most vital technologies in the global data/communication infrastructure. Arguably, all of which could have been someone else, as competition was close to create similar breakthroughs.

The only reason I remembered this was there was a commercial on TV this afternoon for some cell phone service and it showed Marty Cooper and mentioned inventing the cell phone. Then I remembered I had spent a tiny bit of time with him 35 years ago.

Guys like him invented shit for the fun of it and curiosity not the money.
