Wow. This is the future. I'm so excited, school districts across the country need to invest.

Are you being serious? If so, I strongly disagree based off of personal experience.

Still not sure if you're trolling :shifty:

At my school half the students have iPads and I just don't see anything positive. No one uses them for learning in class, they all play on games and the iPad classes do much worse on there tests and such from what I've gathered. Kids have to take notes in iPads for English, math, etc and note taking is slower for math when you have to write on an iPad. Kids get behind because they can't write as fast as the teacher and then they get lost. My school has also had many issues with programs not working or randomly crashing while a test is going on. Very few kids use then properly and they make things more complicated for the students here so I think that right now iPads is not a good idea. Teachers and students need to be better prepared to use then and they need to figure out what apps work best for learning, while finding a way to block games or certain apps, at least during school. Once that stuff is worked out, then iPads could be useful, but I don't think we're ready yet.

We'll if anyone can sort out this mess and make them useful, I'd bet on CCS's resident Eagle Scout =)

Hahaha. I wish.

Maybe its me as a current teacher-student, but the kids are probably goofing off because they aren't challenged enough.

Possibly, but you wouldn't know that from their grades :smh: the problem is they don't care enough to apply themselves in the first place, so now they have an iPad it's just makes them worse and provides another distraction

iPads are like the Ti-83 calculators but better. In high school we all downloaded games onto our calculators then that's all we did during math/science class. If they had iPad with restrictions on them, well then that'd probably be okay. But schools probably don't have money to set up such a system (well colleges should).

That's where grants from the local dog track and casino come into play ;)

I used to have a CS lecture that was near useless because the professor was not understandable due to his accent about 80% of the time, but I went because I had a class nearby before and after that lecture.

I once conquered an entire Star System on Sins of a Solar Empire in a single lecture..... lol it got to the point where my friends in that class would watch me play Sins rather than pay any attention to the lecture.

In 6th grade, we were promised that we'd be done with paper books and move to electronic books "soon."

They never came.

So schools should raise padholes?

Using technology for learning is the way to go, but you can't go proprietary(no single seller status for hardware or software), nor is it wise to use internet devices.

What exactly do you mean by internet devices?

I agree with a lot of what you say with technology, and I guess my point is to be more on the proactive front of technology.

I should say Internet, as in, THE Internet, big I. Schools can have their own intranets and districts could establish their own internet(which is not as big of a deal as it would sound like, as many other internets exist worldwide that aren't at all accessible through your ISP). However, that specification based internet would work different than how the Internet you use works. Basically just access to files through an interface. The files could be the documents that you view that replace a text book, or "apps" of sort to have an interactive experience. And the device IDs would be locked to the class. So no iPads, you would need a different non-proprietary device. You could use existing non-proprietary hardware, as long as it is open for development(which is a double bonus of sorts). That would ultimately make the technology self-sustaining and maintaining. Simply buying a school a ton of existing tablets is a shortsighted fix that will go outdated and blow budgets like no other.
