Pretty stupid to think for a second that could be true

So you think it’s plausible a guy interviewing for a job started making demands about the president and CEO of the organization? I’m sure that happened.

“yeah, this is the job I want. But before you give it to me I need to make some demands that involve me pulling a power move over the CEO and president of the franchise. Before you even give me the job. So am I hired?”
Yeah, it would be another level of stupid for Ballard to come in like that. Ballard, while good at his job-althought I think overrated, is supposed to be a salty older than old school prick, but he's not dumb, and this story would make him an idiot.

It would make sense why Emery extended Cutler before being inevitably fired. Maybe Emery wanted to f*** the next GM like he was when forced to make things work with Cutler...

Phillips is there to protect the McCaskey's interest. Winning is secondary

Not sure it needs protecting since well they are the owners. Do you think a GM or Coach can somehow take ownership away?

From what I recall Sweaty Ted is still there because he helped to secure the stadium deal.

I base my statement on what Jerry Angelo said when he was here and questioned on why he made certain moves or didn't. He coldly stared right at the reporter and said he's here to to "protect the McCaskey's interest." ( If I can ever find that interview, I'll post it.) Plus, I've witnessed this philosophy in action all my life. Make $$$$ first and if wins come....great.

If ted ( I believe he's a former accountant)... is here to secure the stadium deal, then that'll ultimately benefit the McCaskey's family business$$$$ . All my life I can't remember the Bears being about winning and going to SB's. It's been about "being competitive". And that's what Mike McCaskey told Jim McMahon when he got here.

What exactly is it about Ted Phillips that brings the organization down? Is it his involvement in hiring the GM? The Bears spend money (albeit in the wrong places) and make blockbuster trades, so it seems to me the blame can be put squarely on Pace (who selected the wrong QB, neglected the OL and hired the wrong coach) and Nagy.

It’s just weird though. You would think if they can build a competent team year in and year out...it would make them more money.

It has been confirmed many times as true. If you're an elite commodity like Ballard was/is, yes you can make these demands

they only reason their interests are protected is because fools still wait on lists behind other fools that still buy season tickets and sellout a stadium to see a shitty product on the field year after year. If people didnt pay to watch, they would drop Teddy P pretty quick.

Well I read somewhere that the McCaskey kids get paid out 20m each per yr. Idk about u, but I think, I could get by on that and not fix, what's not broken. ? Unfortunately, that's what its come too.

And to be honest that's the way Chicago sports has operated all my life....with the exception of stumbling into a championship win periodically. Shout out to the 1990's Bulls....though. (y)

They made Mack the highest paid defender in the NFL. This argument is dated.

Ted didnt tell Pace to draft 3M over Mahomes. Pace fucked up. That is not on Ted or anyone else.

Check ur old comments. You know why Mahomes and Watson weren't drafted.
If the McCaskey's aren't profitable heads will roll. Ted included.
On Mack, that's what the Bears have always done. Get that one star and ride it out. I've seen this happen over & over throughout my life.

If you are referring to my comments about them being black, I was joking. Don't actually think that matters at all. Virginia was reportedly very fond of Lovie and we have had black QBs before. The fact of the matter is Pace fucked up all by his lonesome. Had nothing to do with Ted or the McCaskeys.

Umm, we also gave ARob a pretty big contract at the time. We gave Fuller a big contract. We gave Hicks a big contract too. You premise isn't supported by reality.

The point is the Bears do just enough to stay competitive and profitable. That's the reality. Note this has 0 to do with winning. Anyone whose watched the Bears over the years knows this.

Side-note: Chris Ballard wanted to shake things up, "drain the swamp" and ownership wasn't having it.
Just curious....how long have followed the Bears. How long have u followed football?

I went to college in Indiana and many buddies are colts fans. They are convinced Ballard is the best thing to ever happen to their franchise besides manning. The Bears didn’t just lose out on a capable guy, they lost out on a premier talent evaluator

Oh well if your Colt fan buddies say this than by God it must be true!!!!!!

You are not making any sense. First it was they only had one big signing and now when I point out a few others, now it is they do only just enough.

The reality is simple. They fucked up the QB pick. If not, we probably have a SB right now so I have no idea where you get the just enough shit from. It is like you think Pace was like, "Well I know we would be a SB contender if I draft Mahomes but since Teddy wants me to only do just enough to stay competitive, I will draft 3M instead."

I'm still wondering how a known quantity and associate like Ballard didn't get the job. I suspect the info in the OP is overstated and that Ballard may have asked for full autonomy and when asked about Jay, said that he would replace him at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Not unreasonable stuff but not what the front office wanted to hear.

Pace on the other hand said, sure, I'll hire any old fart HC you like and extend Jay. This, while handing in his comprehensive notebook of plans with a nice colored pencil drawing in the cover.
Pretty sure it was Emery that Extended Cutler, not Pace. Pace inherited Jay and his fat contract. Not making excuses for Pace as he has been terrible from day one.
Just do not like to see anyone blamed for the Emery/Trestmas era except for Emery/Trestman/Tucker.….

Ya, that's correct. I do recall Pace giving him some sort of vote of confidence when he arrived and/or not taking an opportunity to move on. perhaps it was another mandate to get the job.

everyone says it, their beat writers, owner, fans, players and coach. Ballard will have a real career, while Pace will be saying “welcome to LA fitness may I swipe your card” in the next 5 years
