Is upgrading the PS4 HDD even worth it?

I've heard people filling up their 500GB real quick, but as someone that buys more physical copies, and will only have digital releases when they are digital only, would it be worth it? I don't record videos or anything extraneous that would take up space. I heard it improves loading times, but I am more worried about space. I figure, if I'm going to upgrade, I might as well do it now before I have a lot of shit on there.

seems like 500gb should be a lot of space.

That's what I said as well. The speed gain, as far as loading time, is minimal from what I've read. But people are saying they're filling up the 500gb fairly quickly. I'm wondering how many of them are doing mostly digital downloads and video captures. I do none of that so I'm not sure it'd be worth it in my case. Was just looking to see if anyone on here has run into any storage shortage yet, and how they got there.

I own a One so I can only speak from that standpoint, but installing games fills up the 500gb hdd fairly quickly. about 8 full games with my apps and shit and I'm at the limit. I just bought a 1tb external and keep all my games on that, only using the 500gb hdd for the other random shit I own on that POS console.

Do you not have to install games on the PS4 if you have the physical copy of the disc?

I not sure about filling it quickly, depends how much you download. If you're a PS Plus subscriber (need one if you want to play online) then you're probably taking advantage of the two free games they give out each month. Those are obviously digital only, so downloading two games each month gives you 24 digital games a year, plus any other digital games you download along the way. On the flip side, you don't HAVE to download each game, you don't HAVE have to keep that game on your system forever, and not every game is gigantic in file size. This month's games were The Swapper (392 MB), and inFAMOUS First Light (8.7 GB). Some are small file sizes (like The Swapper), some are medium file sizes (like First Light), some are large file sizes (Destiny- 17.4 GB). If all 24 free games were medium sizes like First Light, they'd fill 208.8 GB themselves. Like botfly said, 500GB should be a lot for what you're gonna use it for.

On a side note, The Swapper is pretty fun and challenging. It's a nice grab for PS Plus subscribers.

You do, but I'm not sure how much info is actually installed from the physical copy as opposed to a purely digital copy. I can't play the game without the disc.

Is Playstation Plus really worth it? I see it's $18 for 3 months, so I might try it out just because I won't miss it.

Holy Shit. I looked into my memory and I've already used 184 GB with 7 games. The Last of Us Remastered is 45 GB alone. The smallest game I have on there is like 19 GB.

Heck yeah, I had it for the PS3, and the quality and quantity of games you get with the subscription was well worth it.

Upgrade if you need to. That's it. Sometimes you'll look at your drive and see a bunch of one and done games that you can wipe and just keep save data.

I don't have a PS4 yet. I'm waiting on a revision first, before I go out and buy one. I plan to ATX my PS4, just like I did to my PS3.

Yeah, probably going to go this route. Thief was like 40+ GB and I'm probably not going to play it again. If I have to upgrade, I will later on.

I didn't delete anything on the PS3. On this one, I may have to be a bit more selective LOL.

I can't speak for PS4 users, but I was under the impression that before you could even play the game you had to install the game first onto your hard drive. On average for this new generation, each game is about 40 GB's. Not to mention apps that you'll be using. 8 games on your hard drive before you have to upgrade sounds about right.

Yeah, I never checked on the PS3 because I didn't exceed the memory. I have over 30 games on that. But I keep hearing about the PS4 memory and decided to check it out and was like "Whoa shit." I'll probably buy a 2 TB for now (since I'm not Crys and can't build a PS4 from table scraps). I can always sell it if they start making larger HDDs for PS4, which I suspect will come in time.

Yeah, that's what I thought. It has to be different with PS4. Although, maybe they still do and 40GB is just a portion of the game LOL. But I have a digital copy of Destiny and it's about the same. I think they put the whole game on there now, but I still can't play it without the disc.
