I heard some discussion over the weekend about how if an executive or manager moves to another organization for what is a promotion, it's customary for there to not be any compensation required.

I dont mind giving up "a guy" but not top drawer talent when/if that's not the custom.

I believe that is the custom, but I think the argument could be made that Theo isn't really receiving a promotion. Theo is going to have way more power than in Boston, but technically he is going from GM of Boston to GM of Chicago. And I think that it is just a custom. So if the Cubs wanted to force the issue on compensation then Boston could just force Theo to honor the last year of his deal.

It is customary that you let them go, but you are allowed to collect something in exchange if your team so desires.

He's still under contract with the Red Sox. So..instead of giving him up with a year on, they get something so it's not a waste. What he agrees with the Cubs, it is his and the organizations deal. Nothing to do with the other team. Both, for the most part separate.

Peter also called Brett Jackson a right-handed hitter.

Buster Olney also is saying Brett Jackson is what the Red Sox are looking for.

Red Sox aren't getting what they are looking for.

You're just pointing out the obvious. We know he has another year on his contract (assuming the Red Sox dont void it). But, again, the topic was about what is customary. The Red Sox are breaking form here. What makes them so fucking special that they shouldn't follow what is custom.
