If the Cubs led the division by 3 games with 10 to play.....would Cub fans feel like it was wrapped up?
Didn't think so.

The Cards lead by 3 with 32 to play......

Seeing all this talk about Javy Baez slumping; 7 for his last 37....but completely ignore Bryant and his 6 for his last 38. But cuz Bryant had that big home run the other day..the numerous other failings just get overlooked. That's a big part of the problem. All this failure that just kind of gets ignored....but adds up quick. It's all part of this myth that continues to get perpetuated. I bet 95% of Cub fans don't even know about Bryant's struggles. And Schwarber is all of a sudden this clutch hitter cuz he tied up the game on Sunday...even though he's hitting just .207 with RISP and a horrific .132 with RISP and 2 outs. I want the Cubs to be good for real. Not buy into this fake narrative that they have all this talent and it's only a matter of time before they "turn it on". It's been over 2 years of waiting for that. BIG changes in offseason are what is necessary to give this club even a shot at the division next year. Not a Descalso and Brad Brach like this past offseason...but real change....and to put it on Maddon is a cop out by Theo. HE IS THE ONE who put this circus together. And if guys are truly waiting for Zobrist to save this team gotta realize he's hitting just .189 in the minors. The lack of clutch hitting has killed this team.....AGAIN. El Mago is pulling his greatest trick of all....disappearing. It all adds up to 3 games back and facing a road trip that could effectively seal the fate of this under achieving disappointment of a baseball team. Let's get good...for REAL. But judging by the way Theo has misspent the 2nd highest payroll in baseball this year...it's gonna take more than just hope in a former...but no longer "genius" to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Who on this board has suggested the fake narrative of "they have all this talent" and "turn it on"? That ship left 2 years ago. Also, you aren't a special Cubs fan. Separating yourself because "95% of Cubs fans don't even know about Bryant's struggkes". LOL. 95% of fans are casual fans. The majority of people work for a living. And yes, Theo has made some poor moves. We've been discussing them ever since he's made them.

So explain to me why so many around here continue to make so many damn excuses for this Cubs team?

Also, @Fred should have paid attention when paragraphs were the subject in school.

Could you provide some examples of "so many excuses"?

Kind of off-topic, but I was listening to Len Kasper on the radio yesterday, and he said the reason the Cubs haven't been able to build/sustain their 2016 success is because the "next wave" of youngsters...Schwarber/Almora/Russell(?)....haven't produced at a Baez/Bryant/Rizzo level. Kind of an interesting take, because it glosses over the fact that the Cubs have the 2nd highest payroll in MLB and Theo's recent history of FA signings is probably the real reason the Cubs have struggled. I think I would buy Kasper's argument if the Cubs had a low payroll and were completely dependent on yearly farm system replenishments. There is so much 'bad money' on the roster, though.

Well, Heyward was a massive signing but his lack of consistency at the plate could be masked with his defense if the other 3 would have contributed. Dervish was dead money for over a year, but is now trending in the right direction. Morrow and Descalso has basically been dead money due to injury and severe poor play. Morrow hurts more than Descalso because of pen issues. But, the Cubs built the team around the young core of position players and were going to always spend on pitching because they went bats before arms. Those 3 guys are all “Theo” guys that he loved the character and make up. Russell never progressed. Almora always had a low ceiling. Schwarbs was the big one that was a love fest over and turned down many trades with him. He has turned out to be Adam Dunn light. I do believe those 3 not developing has made this a mix and match game which has hurt in different ways. There is no one true answer but those 3 were considered cornerstones. Funny, Baez was the one that probably wasn’t in their long term plans.

True, but I think in terms of 'MLB success probability', signing a guy to a $184M contract would have a higher probability than a draft pick. I think its wrong to treat them as being interrelated.

On a side note, I love how Heyward's hitting has gone to crap ever since Maddon put him in the lead off spot. I guess only 95% of us saw that coming.

Do the Cubs have the 2nd highest payroll in the league?
