So, I just got done watching the USA women's gymnastic team win Olympic gold and I have come to the conclusion that I really enjoy winning. As Chicago Cubs fans, we have become very accustomed to losing, and that's not something that we should be happy about it. This is evident in the fact that people are going crazy because we traded Ryan Dempster, our "best pitcher". Yes, I admit, he was good. He had a 2.25 ERA when the Cubbies traded him to the Texas Rangers. But you know what? He's not our future. The fact that Theo and Jed are trying to do something that all us Cubs fans should be happy about. Also, its ABOUT TIME that Geo is off of the Chicago Cubs. The man was batting .199. I am surprised that anyone even wanted him. Jed and Theo must have worked their magic. So people, please look at what they are trying to do. By trading Johnson, Maholm, Soto, and Dempster we have giving ourselves a better chance of succeeding in the future. It seems like we are more excited to win 70 games this year with those players then have a successful future. WELL DONE THEO. WELL DONE.

Im going to ask this again since no one really can give a solid ansewer without skating around the question except maybe I missed dabs since he usually replies.

Great we get it, the cubs got a few specs. Ansewer the question now. Where are the rest of the specs going to come from? Regardless what some fans may think all analysts believe the cubs are setting up for 2015. So I would like to know where the specs are going to come from. Why do I ask that? the mlb roster has one piece left that can bring a haul in garza, the rest is trash (thats if castro isnt dealt) Is it going to come soley on the draft and international signings?

Also, still, wheres the starting pitching? where is that going to come from?

There will for sure be free agent signings and midseason trades for MLB players. But not yet.

Well the OP is all about tearing down the roster and setting up for the future so I don't really get this response.

To answer your question there seems to be this idea that the system was completely barren, and that really isn't true. Pitching is as bad as everyone talks about, and that is going to be a flaw for at least at couple years that is probably going to have to be bought. But there really is a pipeline of position players that Castro and Rizzo where the first pieces. The rest of the guys in that pipeline ceilings are league average starters between Rizzo and Baez, but there are a number of spots where that is going to be upgrade over what the Cubs have.

The prospects are going to come to have to come from the draft and international amateurs. The new CBA certainly doesn't make things easy, but this is the upside to being bad this year and next year at the very least. The Cubs are going to get the more money to spend especially than teams like the Rangers, Jays, Nationals, Yankees, Pirates, etc. that used to spend tons in the draft but are going to have lower caps than the Cubs because they are better now. Those staggered caps will be in the international market next year as well. That is where the bulk of the talent is going to come from, but I wouldn't be suprised if the free agent strategy was similar to what it was last year. Sign veteran players that have a chance to rebound on short term friendly contracts. The Cubs might have a piece or two to move like Paul Maholm that can net the Cubs a significant piece like it did this year. But the vast majority is draft and international amateurs.

This is why I say trying to predict things like when the window is going to open is silly (and if it isn't clear I mean whether it is 2014, 2020 or anywhere between). There are just too many damn questions that could go right or wrong for the Cubs. A number of key things go our way and this team is competitive quickly (2014) but if the vast majority go against than this team is going to take a lot longer than 2015.

Garza can obviously bring in prospects, and the price for him has been pitching. Beyond him there are a lot of "ifs" and "maybe/mights" laying around.

Soriano MIGHT bring in a worthwhile spec IF he is traded this winter, IF he is traded to an AL team, IF the team absorbs all but maybe $4-6M of his remaining contract, and IF his knee doesn't turn to jello in the meantime. LaHair MIGHT bring in a middling prospect as well IF he can turn things around and look like a MLB run producer again. Barney MIGHT bring back a decent prospect IF he doesn't slip with the glove and IF he can get his BA above .275 consistently. However, Barney is an all glove little bat kind of 2B... the very type that loses his job the moment a team acquires or promotes an offensive-oriented player at his position. Castro would definitely bring back a massive haul of specs IF the team ever takes a serious look at trading him... which will only happen IF Baez develops into a solid SS and rises quickly, or the team acquires another strong SS in the process. IF Rizzo pans out, and IF Vogelbach continues to progress as he has thus far... there's a trade candidate right there. But you're looking at 2-3 years down the line.

So now, it comes down to these "If/MIGHT" scenarios... but realistically it's the draft and the international signings.

I see the same thing that you do here, Dew. There will be a boost to the farm when Garza is moved, but the rest will slowly come via drafts and int. signings. Both of those, now, have become limited due to new CBA regulations. I just don't buy into the whole "We're not going to sign FAs until blah blah blah" stuff they've been saying. There's a reason why they have cleared up the future ledgers in terms of payroll beginning next year. It's more than just to get rid of the dead weight. It's more than just to make a huge profit for a while, as the team profits quite well whether they have a $100M payroll or $40M payroll.. and they seem to profit more with the higher payrolls. Also, if you look at how the RedSox rebuilt in the late 90s, and realize that Epstein was there and had a big hand in it, you'll see that they stripped down the old ball club, made a couple of big FA signings while building up their farm system, then brought up a few of their own farm hands that panned out.... then made big trades and big FA signings to fill things out. All the while, they continued to scout and draft well...building up their farm even stronger despite losing picks for FA compensation. I'd be very surprised that Epstein doesn't follow this same sort of path here since he has very similar resources to what they had in Boston.

2015 might be what everyone is saying, and it could be accurate, but it would not surprise me to see Epstein and Hoyer make moves aimed for success beginning in 2014.
