This guy sucks man! First blew a 3 run lead and we lost to the Jays in May. Then he blows a 3 run lead and we lost to the Twins. Now he blows a lead against the worst hitting team in the league the Mariners. Putz or Thornton need to be closing

There's not one closer, that's not blowing saves. I thought Broxton was a top closer, but he blew his last 2 saves.

Please. I'm sick and tired of this "well all closers blow some saves" excuse. The dude sucks. He has a 1.585 WHIP, got that? He's closer to giving up two bases per inning than he is only one. That's unacceptable from a guy that is supposed to be your relief ace.

In his defense, he does still have a 2.7 k/bb ratio. And a 2.78 FIP, and a .400 BABIP.

The numbers say he's been really really unlucky but it doesnt look that way visually.

True, but he is also giving up significantly more line drives than his career average, and is actually benefiting from only a 7% HR/FB rate. He is also throwing significantly fewer pitches inside the strike zone and is also recording fewer swinging strikes than his career averages. He may be getting a bit unlucky, but he isn't helping his cause by walking batters and giving up line drives (which, I think, tend to go for singles and extra base hits more than ground balls or fly balls).

True dat. I would think those things would be included in FIP though, but :dunno:.

Putz needs to be the closer. We need Thornton as he is our only good lefty out of the pen.

Santos would be a no-go as a closer due to his bad control.

Jenks has a save% of 91 (20 for 22), Valverde 95% (19 for 20).

Valverde is also getting a lot of help from an extremely low .187 BABIP that is almost .100 points lower than his career average, and a 3.8 HR/FB%. He's going to regress like a *****.

From what I have read about FIP, it takes into account HR rate (not HR/FB ratio), walk rate and strikeout rate. So if a guy is getting lucky and giving up a ton of fly balls that aren't turning into HR's (as Jenks is with his 10% HR/FB, with the league average being around 12%), it won't be reflected in his FIP. As for other batted ball ratios, I don't think FIP takes those into account.

Right. Because he sucks.
