I saw this story on the news today and just rolled my eyes. I have nothing against religion and respect that others have a right to their beliefs, but this is over the top for me. Little kids love Halloween and look forward to going around and getting candy. I remember getting little tubes of toothpaste one year and thinking we really got hosed. These people are handing out bibles. I'm just tired of people making something innocent and sweet to children into something sinister and evil.

I choose to remain a rebel. I'm still givin' out candy (the good stuff)

What are you guys givin' out?

We always just hand out candy. We don't get as many trick or treaters as we used too. Hearing this article reminds me of Junie Harper on King of the Hill.

All Hallows Eve is a Christian take on the pagan Samhain.

So, christians don't like the holiday they created (heavily borrowed from), so they're creating another one?

Ignoring that Halloween has pagan roots, don't these cretins know that "Halloween" is short for "All Hallows Even" when is VERY Christian in nature. (you posted when I was typing this BHP)

Look I have a lot of enmity for anything christian, but isn't the whole purpose of all of these holidays to forget the trifles and just have fun?

Anyhow, This will be Miška's 1st halloween...should be fun if we can find a party to attend.

I like Halloween because it is an Irish holiday. Samhain was celebrated in Ireland with jakolanterns and festivals. Then the Catholic Church sought to use the holiday to attract Pagan members. So they established All Saints Day on November 1st. Allowing All Hallows Eve to be celebrated the night before. Well crafted I must say.

All Saints Day is something to behold in Italy.

Never realized how big of a holiday it is.

We don't get many trick or treaters as we live out in the country. When we do we are generous with the candy. I've taken the kids trick or treating every year. The boys are getting to old for that but my daughter still goes, she wanted to be medusa this year, but we couldn't find a mask/costume for that. I'm still looking, but looks like she might have to settle for greek goddess.

Sometimes you have to use your ingenuity and personally make a costume like that.

My advice: buy a wig that has a lot of dreadlocks on it, then get a buttload of hollow rubber snakes. Cut off the tail of the snakes and glue onto the dreadlocks so there is not dreadlock showing.

My mom made me a devil costume out of a red union suit with a hood and footies for a Halloween party at church when I was three, the pastor loved it. I told that story to a guy my own age in high school once and he was aghast, but then he was convinced "my kind" was messed up anyway for worshipping Martin Luther (a mistaken assumption he ironically had in common with some of the posters in the Rick Perry thread).

That gives me an idea, if it's not too cold this year I'll dress up as a wet blanket. If any uptight fundies complain I can suggest they go soak their heads while bobbing for apples, just not at Tater's house (no baptism jokes though please, that would be sacreligious).
