I have an interview this afternoon with a manufacturing company. I just found out the hours are 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with alternating 3 and 4 day work weeks. There is also some OT involved. Has anyone here worked goofy hours like that?
I'm a night owl and 3 and 4 day weekends sound nice, but I'm not sure those hours wouldn't mess you up. Thought?

Thanks. I already do have some light-blocking blinds in the bedroom too for sleeping in on weekends.

I've worked 3rds. They didn't mess me up, but when I was working them I had a roommate on a "normal" schedule, and that sort of gets weird when you have to monitor noise levels. I was off by 7am, but I was still wired, so I'd grab some food, go home and watch some SportsCenter (Olberman and Patrick days), then maybe a monster movie.

What is your wife's schedule if any? If she works a "normal" set of hours, be prepared to not see each other as much.

My wife does work normal hours but she says she is OK with it.

I have worked that exact schedule. Every few weeks we rotated to the day shift then back. After 2 years it was killing me.

I did all night shift work while in the military and I loved it, they say being a night owl is genetic so if you are normally up late into the night this is just normal for you.

I like the late shift schedule but have reverted back to days for the jobs I am at now.

I never liked working 3rd shifts, that stretch from 2am to 5am was just to horrific. I would just end up going down to my office and napping for a bit, have someone ring me at 5. It wasn't my shift I was salaried just "checking" on 3rd. Good luck to you. I couldn't do it.

I've worked 3rd shift for a year and a half so far and don't mind it at all. I work M-F 12am-8:30am though so it's a little different. The only drawback is having a different sleep schedule than my fiance but everything else is ok. If you have any errands to run you can do them in the morning when there are very few people out. In my case traffic is immensely better, it takes me 20 minutes to get to and from work. During normal hours it would take 45 minutes. Getting used to sleeping during the day is kind of a pain in the ass but not impossible. Get some dark, or blackout, curtains for your room and take some melatonin and valerian root to help you go to sleep. I've also recently discovered kava tea, it just helps you to relax and it works really well for me.

The rough part is the hours you will be sleeping on work days. On your days off your body clock will want to sleep those hours and will be confused if you try and sleep normal hours resulting in sleep deprivation. Some people have no problem dealing with that.

Used to love mid shift (11-7)... no food break which was fine... you just grabbed a snack that late anyway.
Would get off work, crab a bite, golf, do whatever I needed and hit the hay from 3 to 9 or so...
You are done on Friday at 7AM and good until Sunday night... loved that shift
