]Report: Joe Paterno in 'serious' condition - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN
Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno is in serious condition, according to a family spokesman, after experiencing additional health complications from his lung cancer treatments.
Paterno, 85, was diagnosed with lung cancer Nov. 18 and recently entered the hospital for observation. The diagnosis came just nine days after Paterno, college football's all-time winningest coach, was fired from Penn State in the wake of the sex-abuse scandal.
"Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced further health complications," a Paterno family spokesman said Saturday. "His doctors have now characterized his status as serious. His family will have no comment on the situation and asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."
The Citizens' Voice newspaper is reporting Paterno's friends and extended family members have been summoned to a State College hospital where Paterno is being treated. Paterno was described as frail in a recent interview with the Washington Post, his first extensive public comments since his dismissal.
Very sad news. We'll have much more to come on this breaking story. ...
