Wouldn't mind Santiago filling in for Danks til he's really ready.

John Danks was roughed up again Tuesday, surrendering 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings against the Reds.

Yikes. Danks, who is coming back from shoulder surgery, now sports a 16.36 ERA and 2.91 WHIP over 11 frames this spring, and he's allowed a whopping 27 hits. His fastball has also failed to crack 90 mph.

Shoulder's are tricky as hell. It'll be interesting to see what Hector comes back with as a starter if pushing him into the role is the COA they take. He seemed to do better as a starter last year.

I'd take a shot on Dallas Braden.

It's early, but the thought is hitting me, could Danks be done?

It's a possibility that he might be. At the least his upside is capped for the rest of his career. I don't think he'll be a top of the rotation starter again.

maybe. I think he is done being a front line starter. I mean maybe he can become more crafty as he heals and try to replicate mark buehrle a soft tossing lefty that is a pitcher and not a thrower. I feel less confident in danks than I did when peavy had surgery. so Im with ya on this.

It just super stinks because I really fell hard for our rotation.

It's possible Danks could be washed up as shoulders and surgeries are tricky. But you can't forget this is the first time Danks has thrown in how many months? Got to give him time, it may take some time for his velocity to get up there. Starting on the DL so he can make ML starts is a good idea, and if he takes a bit to get ready then better he get shelled in AAA than in the majors.

I don't think he takes that long. He isn't in any physical pain when he throws. He just needs to get his arm strength back, he hasn't thrown a ball since June.

if there is any slight chance for the sox, danks has to be good and healthy or we are done

It helps, obviously, and it would be great if he's ready to go by May. But, him being the factoring piece is silly.

The key factor is if and how much the "Tank" improves. If Viciedo can OPS over .800 the lineup looks much better than most of us expect.

I would throw Rios in there. If he is the guy he was last year than the middle of the order should be fine. If he is 2010 Rios or the guy in TO right before they waived him than there is going to be problems.
