I don't know if I shared this with anyone outside a few people. About a month ago(long story short) someone ran into a utility box really close to my house. I had a pretty bad power surge that destroyed a ton of equipment and my main computer. Ironically, also destroying some very pricey "surge protectors" and power conditioners.

I had no TV, was using a 12 year old computer that I forgot I had, no fridge, and custom build studio hardware that all had damage.

Well, the person who hit the box, was a cop. I'm not here to badmouth cops, but the way they filed the report, was trying to pin the blame elsewhere. Myself, and three neighbors who also dealt with major damages, ran into problems with our insurance due to how the report was filed. Eventually we got everything sorted out, and I picked up the check today. First thing that was on my mind, was build a new computer. Of course, with depreciation, insurance only covered so much. But that was okay, because I also had parts that appreciated in value(while better replacements could be found for less).

yada yada... Yes, so I'm a happy camper. I don't game a ton, but when I do, it's on my PC 9 times out of 10.

I had a Dual CPU Opteron 6172 system with 32mb ram, and Radeon 1GB 7850 before.
On order, 2x Opteron 6376s, TYAN S8230, 64gb ram, and a 7790 paired with a GeForce 610 1x card(waiting on HD89xx to come out) and I'll run a hybrid for physx, while the 7790 gets dropped into a different system. And of course, all the other stuffs, PSU/Drives, fans, ect. It's still less than what insurance paid me for the old system, so hopefully, I made out okay :)

Oh, the fun times! LOL Well, it's been hell for the last month, so I hope this makes up for it.

How much does building a computer like that normally cost the average gamer?

I'll game on it just fine and dandy. But it's not for gaming.

I had some warranties too, which were valid, even with the circumstances. So I'm not going to be paying a whole lot. AMD let me trade up on the chips(they still posted, solid as hell, but they run hot quick, so I'm not risking it). The memory had a warranty, and the video card was a sapphire, which does a 3rd party trade-up program. I'm just going to send it in and use a credit on a HD89xx card. Plus, I had parts, like the case, waterblocks, radiator.

I'm going to say from scratch. 500, 1500, 600, 300, 200, 400, 250, 100, 50.... $4000-ish. I do a lot of work from home, and intensive work, so I would NOT suggest something like this for pure gaming. You could get the same gaming performance for about $1200.

Swapped the 7790 for a 7850, because the 7850's are being phased out. And the 7850 is all-around a better card. $169 for the 7780, and $164 for the 7850. Just a a heads up for anyone who was waiting on a deal for a new GPU from a reputable brand.

Isn't all the RAM a little overkill? You mentioned that your rig isn't exclusively for gaming, so maybe that's why.

It is overkill for games. In fact, some games/applications run slower when the OS is trying to keep track of everything. However, it's not a big hit(well, I still don't know for sure if there will be any hit, because of the raw CPU power), and I actually run applications that LOVE the headroom, like different CAD programs, audio tools, SQL functions, ect.

What he is building sounds way high end and like he said its not just for his gaming its also for work.

I build gaming rigs for people sometimes and I usually tell people 1200$ minimum to build a lower end gaming rig that will play anything on the market right now on Medium - High depending on the game. 1500-2000$ will usually get you a machine that will play anything out there right now on high, and IMO 2000-3000$ you can build something with about the highest end specs that can be said are for gaming.... anything beyond that price range you are either going overkill just to max things out, like you can buy some crazy 800$ case just to say you have an LCD temp monitor on it, but you dont need it.... or you are like Crystallas and you are doing work stuff that is more demanding on your rig than playing Crysis on Ultra graphics.... people don't realize how much memory and CPU you need when doing work with large data sets in SQL Server or other business applications.

Side story.... The product I work on has a terminal server we all remote in to and it has all the tools we need to do our work. However when they built it out they gave it 4GB of RAM 2 CPUs and 80 GB of hard drive space. It has to run database operations work for 4-6 people or more at any given time. So I go to the Windows Server team and ***** for more resources and they ask why and I yell in to the phone "BECAUSE YOU BUILT ME A TERMINAL SERVER WITH THE SPECS OF A LOW END GAMING RIG I BUILT 4 YEARS AGO AND IT NEEDS TO DO THE WORK OF 4 PEOPLE!" .... best part.... the guy answers back "Yeah, well that server isn't built for gaming, its built for running business applications" :obama:

Yeah, I can notice the performance. The problem is, I can also notice the heat, because I haven't received the coolant I ordered to install the waterblocks and go cool and silent.

I am unable to understand clearly that what do you meant by Isn't all the RAM a little overkill?

Thanks to all here.

No, I'm actually going to change to a 128gb configuration when summer is over. Right now, I have run into a few projects where I'm running into memory walls, forcing me to break up the objects.
