My favorite teams
From 1999 to 2007 I was the Golf Chairman and Board Member of a private country club in Chicago. The club had a Caddy program I oversaw along with the Head golf pro of the club. One of the things we did was to help deserving kids /caddies qualify for an Evans Scholarship. This is a midwestern based program owned by the Chick Evans foundation and has many millions of dollars they use to fund full 4 year college scholarships and room/board to any state college in the midwest. The total value of this could range to $180,000.
The head pro and I prided ourselves in getting 1-2 of our caddies these scholarships each year. We would lobby for them through the selector committee and teach them how to interview. We even proof read their essays. Suffice it to say, we were very successful and got about 10 kids full rides during those 7 years
Another program I started was the Honorary Junior Golfer program which allowed a talented and needy local teenager the ability to play our private club as if they were a member's child. This allowed them to use our club all summer, all day. Each year we would interview 10 candidates and select 3-7 every year depending on the interview and their attitude and grades
Maybe I'm not so bad after all.
