Kruger coming to replace Bolland

While there has been no official word from the Blackhawks, Swedish prospect Marcus Kruger will join the team Wednesday as a replacement for Dave Bolland at center.

The 20-year-old Kruger just finished his second season in the Swedish Elite League playing for Djurgarden, where he had 6 goals and 29 assists in 52 games.

Kruger, a 5-foot-11, 172-pound Bolland-type heady center, was rookie of the year in Sweden's top league last season as a 19-year-old.

"He's a very smart player, in the Dave Bolland mold, if you were going to compare him," Hawks general manager Stan Bowman said recently. "He does all the little things. He just knows how to play hockey."

Kruger is expected to join the Hawks at Wednesday's morning skate and likely will be in the lineup Wednesday night against Florida.

"We saw him in camp and I've seen him play a few times and he's a kid who is a responsible player with good hockey sense and instincts," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Tuesday. "We'll see how it works out. It's an opportunity for us to assess him quickly and see if he can fit right in there.

"We're missing two important players in (Patrck) Sharp and Bolland. We'll see kind of adjustment there is, but he has real good instincts and that can help him quickly."

Bowman started the process of bringing Kruger over even before Sharp hurt his left knee Sunday against Phoenix. This was a move made to help fill the void left by the absence of Bolland, who has a concussion and isn't expected back anytime soon.

"He's the same," Quenneville said.

The Hawks drafted Kruger in the fifth round in 2009 and wanted him on the NHL roster this season.

“He didn’t think he was ready for the NHL,” Bowman said.

While the Hawks won’t have Bolland or Sharp against Florida, defenseman Brian Campbell practiced and might be available to play. Campbell has missed the last three games with a foot injury.

He's the same...

Well one of them has a few years NHL experience, a Stanley Cup, and well has played with World Class players for most of his NHL career. The other one, none of those attributes.

Comparing Kruger to ANY NHL player with absolutely NO North American experience is quite the stretch.

I haven't seen Nana today, she must actually be working.....

Kidding aside, kid's probably fragged from the transatlantic flight, media shock and all.

Hope he can take advantage of the opportunity.

On a serious note - a poster from the 300 level noted this:

re: getting kicked out of face-offs, during the 2nd TV time out of the second period, Kruger, Hjalmersson and Toews were chatting while standing on the ice by the Hawks bench and Toews leaned over a couple of times like he was setting up to take a draw. Not sure if Toews was showing a few tips mid-game regarding about NHL draws and Hjalmersson was interpretting or what, but loved seeing the Captain helping out the yewt.

Pretty cool... or should I have put this in the Did You Know Toews is Awesome? thread?

Don't worry I'm sure it will make it into it's own "Now we are calling up guys who don't even know how to take faceoffs" hate thread.

he only took 5. Toews was not doing so well until later in the game. I think they were talking about how the ****** was dropping the puck.
