The Diamondbacks have named long-time big leaguer manager Tony La Russa their new Chief Baseball Officer, the team announced.
“The entire organization is obviously frustrated with the results on the field and we are looking to improve," said team CEO Derrick Hall in a statement.
La Russa will oversee the team's baseball operations department and will work to determine if changes are needed. GM Kevin Towers will report directly to La Russa.
La Russa, 69, retired from managing after leading the Cardinals to the 2011 World Series title. He had been working in Major League Baseball's executive offices since.
The D-Backs come into Saturday with a 16-28 record, tied with the Astros for the most losses in baseball. Their -73 run differential is by far the worst in the game.
Towers recently said he does not feel his job is secure due to the team's slow start and the La Russa hiring does not seem to bode well for his future
