He actually was the first play by play announcer on MNF, but for just one year.

He was, indeed, the voice of college football. But he did good work on baseball, and other sports. A true titan.

I loved his "Oh, we've got a dandy", and as noted above he coined the phrase "The Granddaddy of 'em all", and is also credited with naming "The Big House".

For Illini fans, he was also the play by play announcer on the 1989 game in which Nick Anderson buried the long buzzer beater to beat Indiana.
