So Amazon has just bought the rights to Lord Of The Rings for a TV show:

Not sure how I feel about this. I guess it can't be worse than the hack job Peter Jackson did. They say it'll be about stories preceding The Fellowship Of The Ring. If we're talking "young Aragorn" stories.... pass. Now if we're talking shit from the Silmarillion then I'm all in. Give me Morgoth over Sauron any day pf the week. Lets see some elves when they were fuckin elves ya know?

Silmarillion or gtfo.

Honestly though I'm already pretty hyped for it. But I'm also a bit worrisome in how they transfer it on a typically lower budget television screen versus the big silver screen.

Also think it will fall short to GoT.

LOTR is one of those things.... yeah im watching it.

But I have never read thru the entire fucking tome that Tolkein put out, so idk how badly the story was butchered in the movies.

Last I read, the rights they bought didn't include most of the primary characters. So, pucker your butthole for several seasons of Tom Bombadil, the Life and Times.

I've always found Tom to be an interesting character. Is he a Vala? The ring has no power over him....

He changed so much from the books it was ridiculous. I know it's a movie but still, he ruined whole characters. (like Faramir for example)

That and I want to punch my fucking TV every time Sam comes on.

Ian McKellen was the only redeeming thing in those movies.

Don't even get me started about turning the Hobbit into three movies. Worst cash grab I've ever seen.

In rewatching the LOTR movies I was examining the overall story recently.

A couple things stand out to me now in comparison to other big movie/show series.

1. Very few named protaganist character deaths and you rarely think a named character might die, or at least I never did.
- Boromir and Theoden are the two that come to mind.
- Gollum and Sauruman from the antagonist side.
- At no point did I ever really worry that Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Sam, Merry, nor Pippen would die.
- Gandalf doesn't really count IMO.... he dies and then comes back in the next movie.

2. Not much in the way of individual character triumphs/fights....
- Sam vs Shelob
- Aragorn vs the Uruk-hai leader in Fellowship
- Legolas vs an Olyphant?
- Gandalf vs Sauruman in Fellowship?
- Eowyn vs Witch King

I am not pointing these out to knock LOTR, but rather I find it interesting that it took this long for me to notice, and it did not take away from the overall story IMO.

Tolkein wrote a fantastic story and didn't need a Red Wedding nor a dozen shocking character deaths....

Jackson did a great job with LOTR. It sounds like nothing would have ever lived up to your expectations.

I feel like the books and the movies were a masterpiece and both are were good despite the differences.
