I wonder if it's cheaper to give a bunch of money to these people so they can OD instead of having them live off the system... hmmmm. I kid of course.

I was reading about lotto winners yesterday. Most "low income" big money lotto winners are bankrupt within 5 years. It simply amazes me someone can go from surviving on very little, to squandering 10 million in lotto winnings in 5 years.

I should know the answer to this, but is there a documentary out there that covers this subject?

The main problem is most people who win that kind of money begin to live beyond there means.

technically anyone can blow any amount of money in a day. That wasn't my point. My point is, if you can get by on 30 grand a year, WTF is wrong with you to blow 10 mil in 5 years, i wasnt implying it was impossible or anything.

I did see a show on it once awhile back, like a special report for the news.

I dont think it is the initial spending that kills the funds... It is the upkeep costs like property tax, assessments, insurance, etc.

I know if I won 10 mill? Every close person in my life would live car and mortgage free lives. With the rest? Upgrade my own pad to a bit sexier location, a few toys, and then become a recluse that would make Howard Hughes jealous...

I remember reading a fairly long article 1000 years ago about this and that was about right. They took either 10 of the biggest winners ever or for a state or whatever and they analyzed the post-winnings life. All but one they did exposes on were bankrupt.

The one that wasnt, kept his job, kept his house, spent money on college for kids, modest houses for family and his own, but paid for. Then he opened his own "store" where people were welcome to pitch ideas or charity stories and the like and gave away the bulk of the winnings.

Damn. I was hoping to hit that. Another perfectly good piece of white trash thrown away too early.
