This kind of attitude is why the mental health discussion needs to continue.

Reports from the Jonathan Dwyer mess indicate that he'd had suicidal thoughts and was expressing these thoughts in messages. You think that guy's in a proper mental state?

This does not excuse his actions. But if there's something psychologically wrong with a person, a psychological ailment that causes sudden and violent mood swings, shouldn't that be explored?

Of course it should, absolutely. I just find it funny that a generally intolerant-to-crime public is all of a sudden so understanding and eager to find excu ... reasons ... for the behavior of sports figures they hold in high regard. I'm not having a go at anyone specific in this thread, I'm just talking about a general narrative that seems to pervade these kinds of incidents.

This is the kind of fanboy-like defense of beloved sports figures I'm talking about. Why do you hold them in such high regard? We're talking about a guy who habitually abused women, and is now called a hero for not doing so anymore. **** that.

Hey, I'm 100% against abusing women and children and if you do it front of me, you will end up on your back fast. Now as for Marshall, I have a friend who was a Dolphins fan who would tell that Marshall seems like he was changing and I was like nah, he is still the same. We don't know what everyone does at home. The thing is since he has been a Bear, I have heard nothing but good things and I believe in 2nd chances in certain situations. People can change. Unless people actually grow up in an environment like some people do, then they will not understand how certain things happen.

It just seems you're holding B & B to a high regard for what they're saying right now, and I don't understand why.

What? I'm not even listenting to them. I'm talking about the case regarding Marshall and this is revelation regarding the woman he was dating at the time.

No, he's just called him 'Kudell'

You're right.

Also, does anyone else think Brandon is going to have another monster game on Monday? Hopefully he uses his frustration as fuel. Funny thing is the MNF game is actually on ESPN. Will be interesting to see what they say about him during the game.

Jeremy Stoltz ‏@BearReport 40m

Letter from Ms. Whatley's attorney demanding $100K: "If the case is settled, it will remain confidential and away from the media."

Jeff Arnold ‏@JeffArnold_CF 42m

Marshall: "(Domestic violence) is not an NFL problem - it's an epidemic in our world." Says It's not the NFL's job to grow boys into men.

dan durkin ‏@djdurkin 42m

Marshall: We're kidding ourselves if we think the NFL is supposed to take boys from college and raise them as men. #Bears

Zach Zaidman ‏@ZachZaidman 43m

Marshall: "This is an epidemic in our world. It's not the NFL's job to raise men."

Jen Lada ‏@JenLada 43m

Marshall: this is not (just) a problem in the NFL - this is a problem in our world.

Jeremy Stoltz ‏@BearReport 44m

In Marshall packet: two demands from Whatley's attorney for $100K. One demand for $500K.

Jeremy Stoltz ‏@BearReport 46m

Just looking through this packet of info Marshall brought with him. Statement signed by Whatley to Goodell saying it was a money grab.

Jeremy Stoltz ‏@BearReport 48m

Marshall finishing up. Safe to say he's done his last ESPN piece.

Obama 'evolved' on his position on *** marriage (which is good to you) - is not possible for people (with a mental illness) to evolve as well?

Who is calling him a hero? On the contrary, he's bringing attention to it and trying to help a bit. What would you like him to do? Retroactively put himself in prison?

LOL Obama is a politician. His view on anything at any given time is whatever suits him.

And no I'm not denying that Marshall has improved and worked at changing his life. Never said that at all. My beef is with the mouthbreathers who, when presented with any situation where a woman is accusing a sports figure of abuse, is immediately assumed to be a money grabbing whore.

I watched most of presser... I like Brandon, and I was happy to see the Bears support one of thier leaders by offering him the forum... but in hindsight they should have nicely said NO. It was awkward to watch, and very disjointed. He should have used his time on that HBO show or whatever to discuss all of this, and kept the BEARS orginzaiton out of it. Even though Brandon's intention was good, this presser didnt paint a great picture of him. I guarentee the Bears are wishing they could take this one back.

Expect a Bears (Brandon Marshall press conf ) damage control press conference coming soon......

You picked a bad time for this statement, as in Marshall's case, she WAS a money grabbing whore!

I'd disagree that it's a general narrative because Marshall is the only case I can think of where a player had been involved in some sort of incident, received an official medical diagnosis, and then rehabilitated himself and his image. I think you're being a tad too cynical here.

I fully understand your point about people justifying the deplorable actions of sports figures (or any other figures, really) they hold in high regard. But I don't believe you can throw Marshall into that category because his situation is unique.

He actually said during his press conference that he "couldn't care less about football. This (Mental health awareness) is his platform)." When have you ever heard an athlete say that he couldn't care less about the sport he played in the middle of his career?

For the record, Marshall said "I could care less" but I went ahead and fixed that minor grammatical error for him.

Because defending yourself from bullshit is best done on a private, paid, channel instead of an open channel with a national audience. Mmmmmokies.
